## Emplacement
A City of Art and History, Vannes lies at the gateway to the Gulf of Morbihan, in southern Brittany, on the Marle estuary. You'll start by admiring the medieval ramparts, some of the best preserved in Brittany, which offer a charming walk along the Garenne, a path that runs alongside them, dotted with gardens and pretty washhouses. After discovering the port, with its tree-lined quays including the Quai de la Rabine, take the 17th-century Porte Saint-Vincent, built to link the port and the historic quarter: you enter the old town along a street lined with old buildings, town houses and timber-framed houses. Walk up to the Place des Lices, where the 1912 covered market awaits you. In terms of events, the Fêtes Historiques de Vannes is held in mid-July. Vannes is an ideal starting point for exploring the Gulf of Morbihan by boat: there are around forty islands, not including islets, each with its own special characteristics. These include Arz, Ile aux Moines, Houat, Hoëdic and many others.
