Cozy winter stay
We had a great stay for a family ski trip over the New Years holiday week. The cabin had a cool a-frame design with a nice wrap around deck featuring views of Bear Mountains ski trails through the trees. We were fortunate to get snow during our stay and we were able to ski down the road to Bear Mountain ski area. The walk back up was a bit tougher but a manageable 10 minute walk while carrying our 4 year old and ski gear. The walk was worth it to get a little distance the busy parking area and noisy snow operations at the resort without having to drive and pay for resort parking. We also found nice sledding and nature trails in the national forest about a 10 minute walk from the cabin. Aside from ski and snow play we cooked meals in the cabins newly remodeled kitchen, played games by the fire and never needed to drive anywhere during our stay.
Things to note:
The down stairs room in the cabin was noticeable cooler but we did not sleep down there and didn’t care. Snow removal didn’t get done during our stay but we were able to get into one of the parking stops and didn’t mind walking down the path to the house through a few inches of snow but this could be tough for people with mobility issues or for people wanting to use the second parking spot which was unplowed. We did find dog hairs around the house and though there could be more careful cleaning especially for the price tag of the cleaning fee. Another thing of note we found the linens to smell too strong of scented laundry detergent for our taste. Finally the town of Big Bear Lake has some pretty awkward rules requiring checking in in-person with a property management company and hauling away your own garbage that are just a fact of life when it comes to renting in Big Bear, some people might find the local laws inconvenient.
