The Georgian resides in the exclusive 'Glacial Terrace' locals-only private enclave accessible only by Guests of The Georgian and family members of nearby estate cottages. The area is one of the most sought after amongst the affluent who enjoy the absolutely stunning sunsets and beautiful recreation activities of the North Channel. It is a 5 min drive into the heart of Tobermory village. Tobermory is a harbour village on the Bruce Peninsula in the province of Ontario. Just southeast, Bruce Peninsula National Park is known for the Bruce Trail footpath on the craggy Niagara Escarpment, and the Grotto, a wave-carved cave in Georgian Bay. The village lies next to Fathom Five National Marine Park, which is home to the Flowerpot Island sea stacks, 19th-century lighthouses and multiple shipwreck dive sites.
Native Land Acknowledgment
We acknowledge the traditional Territory of the Anishinabek Nation: The People of the Three Fires known as Ojibway Odawa and Pottawatomie Nations. And further give thanks to the Chippewas of Saugeen, and the Chippewas of Nawash, now known as the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, as the traditional keepers of this land.
Have you ever wondered about why the waters of Georgian Bay can appear to take on a beautiful aqua colour? It's a product of light refracting through calcite in the water.
Calcite comes from the dolostone that makes up the escarpment. Rainfall events (rain is naturally slightly acidic) or water agitating surrounding rocks can cause calcium carbonate to leech from the stone or other calcium-rich compounds, such as marl, and crystallize in the lake water, becoming calcite. These crystals double-refract the light (also called birefringence), creating the beautiful hue that our eyes see.
This is the second post of a series about the geology of the Niagara Escarpment.

"One of the most beautiful cottages I have ever stayed at. Just unreal." - Melanie B. 2022
The cottage is beautifully re-designed and is located on a picturesque view of the waterside. It is private and spacious and has the rustic, vintage feel of a traditional Canadian lodge, has a fully equipped kitchen with premium appliances, 4-bedrooms and 2 baths, and is just a short drive to great restaurants and shops in Tobermory. The area is also renowned for its natural "flowerpot" rock pillars, caves, historic light station and rare plants. Most of the visitors take cruise line boat tours from the town of Tobermory to spend quality time on the island hiking the trails, viewing the scenery, picnicking or swimming.
A vehicle is required to travel on inland roads.
A 10-15' max. sailboat can dock on the water's edge, or at the marina in Tobermory.
Discover the Grotto at Bruce Peninsula.
