The home is so amazing. We got lost between rooms! It is so beautiful and true to its history but homey and comfortable. There were 10 of my family, sisters, daughters, granddaughters and cousins for a girls weekend. We spent the wekend in comfort surrounded by an unbelievable ambiance. We highly recommend this home and dealing with Rich was easy and friendly.

A slice of the good life
We could not have enjoyed staying here more. The photos show an elegant and comfortable grand home, but they don’t hold a candle to the reality. The home was so elegant and so comfortable.
We were a group of 11 friends coming for a magical weekend in Salem and the home became the centerpiece of our time (and photo shoot) in the best possible way.
I hope I get a chance to say somewhere this beautiful again soon. Salem was beautiful and this home was a privilege to stay in as we explored her wonderful history.

Salem Family Fun!
We had 2 of our children from California and the grandkids home for a family reunion for both sides of our family. Richard was a great host and called me ahead of time to give me a heads up on restaurants and attractions. Later in the week, Richard joined us on the back patio and gave us incredible information about the history of the house. This house is much larger than it looks like online. Bedrooms are huge and a very well equipped kitchen made our visit just like home. Thanks Richard. Next time we come back to Boston we will be sure to stay here again!

Beautiful home and welcoming, accommodating owner
12 members of my family (8 adults, 4 children ages 6mos — 5yrs) recently stayed at Rich’s property for a family reunion. The home is even more beautiful than in pictures, and I was a little worried when I walked into a property full of authentic period antiques. But Rich was very kind (and pointed out that he’d raised three children there himself), and also indicated which items were particularly fragile so we could make sure they were out of the children’s reach. The backyard was particularly beautiful, and we made great use of it and were able to grill. I would highly recommend this large, comfortable, gorgeous property, and am
so grateful to Rich for the opportunity to stay there.

Great Home for a Big Family Celebration
We were looking for a home that could accommodate my extended family for a weekend that culminated in my son’s graduation from Tuft’s. Close to everything Salem has to offer, this gracious historic home with the fabulous sunroom is thoughtfully appointed and the kitchen/bedrooms/bathrooms had everything we needed. Rich was excellent with communication. He met us at the home when we arrived and we toured the home together while he educated us on its history. He also gave us some very helpful advice about negotiating Logan airport because some of us were arriving late Friday, or recommending nearby restaurants. Check out was easy. We had two Octogenarians in our group and the 2nd floor rooms accommodated them well. We did not have any family members under the age of 21. Everybody enjoyed the home. Salem is such an interesting and vibrant town. It was a wonderful weekend. Highly recommended. Thanks, Rich!

Beautiful large historic home in Salem
Our family traveled to Salem for a wedding. This home is huge. Pictures don’t do it justice. Beautiful antiques, art and carpet. Plenty of room for everybody. The sun room is amazing and so comfortable. Perfect location in Salem for walking around town. The owner lives in the home and meets you at check in to discuss some of the characteristics of the home.
This is my first Vrbo where the owner actually lives there and packs a bag to leave when you arrive. Because the owner lives there it was a challenge unpacking your suitcase and finding space for your items because the dressers were full of personal items. There was a rolling clothing rack provided where you could hang up your clothes in each room. Sometimes I wasn’t sure what items I could use in the house and what things I should not touch. I felt like I was staying in my very friendly uncle’s home instead of a vacation home where I could just unpack and chill out.
Due to the age of the home, there is no central air conditioning. However, there are individual units in each room as well as fans that help keep the rooms cool.
Once I got over my own apprehension about touching things, we relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed the home. I would highly recommend staying here if you are an antique lover or a history lover, because this location and this house cannot be beat.

Acerca de su propietario/a
Propietario/a: Rich Jagolta
This is my family's home, not merely a property I own for rental purposes. As such, I am careful to rent it to visitors who will appreciate and respect its history and the care I have put into preserving both the house and its furnishings. However, it's a comfortable house meant to be lived in, and it's important to me that guests relax and enjoy it as much as my children and I do.
I've had an eclectic and interesting work life, including being an international banker on Wall Street, head of a wine importing and distributing company (yes, for a time I got paid to drink wine), a business workout and turnaround consultant, and now a real estate broker.
I was raised on the North Shore of Boston, but have traveled extensively around the world. I have degrees from Georgetown University and University of Chicago, and have been a Fellow and faculty member at Harvard University. I have lived in New York, London, Chicago, Washington, and Cambridge before moving to Salem 20 years ago. I was attracted to Salem not just for its outstanding history and culture, but because, if one is so inclined, there is something fun and different to do here every day. There are always music, literary events, museum shows, history talks, political events, and lively restaurants and bars. I also enjoy the opportunity to bike, run, stand-up paddleboard, sail, kayak, practice yoga, and many other active lifestyle activities available in Salem.
One of the reasons I rent out the house is to help pay for the large expense of maintaining a house like this, and also to give people who may not otherwise have the opportunity or inclination to own this kind of property themselves a chance to experience it firsthand.. However, I also do it because I have met some wonderful and fascinating people this way. I look forward to meeting you.
Por qué escogió este alojamiento
I had been looking at houses to buy for about a year, and found some that were interesting but, none that were exactly right. I knew as soon as I drove up to this house that it was the one. As a high school student, I attended a few balls and parties at Hamilton Hall, the Federalist meeting hall a couple of hundred yards down Chestnut Street. I was fascinated that I was attending parties in the same room in which historical figures like the Marquis de Lafayette had been to parties. I had taken the trolley tour that describes the historic homes of Chestnut Street, and knew that fascinating people had lived on the street in the past - Thomas Saunders, the venture capitalist who provided Salemite Alexander Graham Bell with the funds to start his telephone company; Ernest Fenellosa, the Japanese Imperial Commissioner of Fine Arts, Frank Benson, the Impressionist artist; Stephen Phillips, King Kamehameha of Hawaii's first attorney general, charged with writing an American style constitution for that country. I knew that what was to become my own house had been first lived in by Leverett Saltonstall, the first Mayor of Salem. It made me wonder what famous visitors to Salem may have been entertained right here.
The lovely yard and garden are also an appealing aspect of this home.
Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial
I have lived in this home for over twenty years now, and I still notice new details that never caught my eye before. There are the ten fireplaces, some with carved and columned wood mantels and surrounds, some with marble, some with soapstone inserts, one with brass. There are the 54 windows, some with bulls-eye glass, most with the original, slightly wavy period glass, and even one with antique graffiti - JA Tuckerman scratched into it. The Tuckermans lived here in 1860. There's the three story suspended spiral staircase, so amazing a technological feat in 1810 architects have been writing about and studying it ever since.
The ability to reside on a lovely residential street, yet be within walking distance of Salem's vibrant downtown allows one to easily take advantage of Salem's wonderful museums, historic, artistic, and cultural attractions, waterfront, restaurants and shops.
Few people are fortunate enough to have the experience of living in a home like this, which many people liken to a museum more than a traditional house. It's even rare to have the opportunity to stay in one. I enjoy sharing that others. This is your chance to experience it, too.
