Your Harpswell adventure begins at Whispering Winds Cottage, a charming turn-of-the-century 5-bedroom home tucked within the historic and idyllic Auburn Colony. This serene, private retreat is rich in character and offers over 2,000 square feet of space, making it perfect for families or groups looking to relax, reconnect, and experience the magic of coastal Maine.

Perched on a western ridge of scenic farmland, the Auburn Colony features 10 beautifully preserved cottages, each with its own character yet collectively creating the feeling that time has stood still. The community spans 20 shared acres of fields, forest, and shoreline. Guests have access to a stunning Dining Hall where meals are served a few evenings a week, along with a beloved Sunday brunch. The Colony also includes a Recreation Hall for games and activities, and a sparkling in-ground pool — all maintained with historic integrity and charm. The entire colony is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Whispering Winds Cottage is the most private of the 10 homes and is ideally situated closest to the waterfront and pool. Inside, the cottage offers five comfortable bedrooms, with three full-size beds and two twins, and one queen size, along with two full bathrooms — one featuring an antique claw-foot bathtub. The home is equipped with modern amenities such as WiFi, a fully stocked kitchen with a dishwasher, a washer and dryer, and three heat pump splits providing both air conditioning and heating for added comfort. Please note there is no traditional heat source in the home.

On the main floor, you’ll find the kitchen leading to an oversized, sun-filled living area with high ceilings and a cozy sunporch. Two of the five bedrooms and one full bath are located on this level. Upstairs, you’ll find three additional bedrooms, a second full bath, and a balcony deck with tranquil views of the ocean and pool. Outside, the spacious front porch is the perfect spot to unwind, enjoy ocean breezes, and take in unforgettable sunsets. There’s also easy water access just beyond the pool — ideal if you’d like to bring or rent kayaks.

Between relaxing at the cottage, enjoying the pool, dining in the historic hall, or taking part in community games and gatherings, you’ll find endless ways to enjoy your stay in this one-of-a-kind summer community.

Harpswell itself offers plenty to explore, from quiet beaches and scenic hiking trails to waterfront restaurants, local shopping, and, of course, fresh lobster straight from the boat. Just 20 minutes away, Brunswick is home to Bowdoin College, the Maine State Music Theatre, and a vibrant downtown. The cottage is also conveniently located for day trips to Portland, Freeport (home of LL Bean), Bath, Popham Beach, Boothbay Harbor, and even Bar Harbor.
