The stay was great, close to town just off the main road. House was clean and well kept, the garage was a BIG bonus! Property manager/Owner is right next door so if you need anything he is right there for the guests.

We have stayed at MANY VRBOs, and very rarely have the opportunity to have face to face with the host. John is an amazing human and was very helpful with making recommendations for things to do in the area. The property was immaculate, and he has thought of EVERYTHING! Next time we're in Bayfield we'll definitely be staying again if we still haven't found property to buy.

The hospitality was amazing. John went out of his way to make us feel welcome. For example, he gave us referrals for hiking and sightseeing. He also recommended a great place for pizza and even called them to see if we could get in.

This was the ideal place to stay for our long weekend in Bayfield. We felt like we were in the middle of the woods but yet were only a couple minutes from town. Very convenient! The cabin was very clean and a great size. We would definitely stay again if in the area!

This VRBO is located on a beautiful property outside of town. It was very quiet and peaceful. The Carriage House was spotless and supplied us with everything we needed. John, the host was very friendly and accomadating. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

Check-in was easy. The host met us there, gave a quick walk thru, had a book of current place, and events handed us the keys, and that was it. The place was very clean, well supplied, and tucked away. Host checked in to aee if we needed anything. It was very enjoyable would definitely stay again.

John is a super host. He shared maps and suggestions for things to do during our stay. The Carriage House was perfect for two friends to spend time in beautiful Bayfield along Lake Superior. It was clean, had all the necessary cooking supplies, including a gas grill on the front porch. There was a beautiful trail to hike right outside the door on the property. Being able to pull into the garage and park the car was a plus. Anything we needed, John was able to help with promptly, such as bug repellant for our outings. The property is very close to town.

The Carriage House was a great lace to stay while visiting Bayfield and area. All of the details - large and small - were taken into consideration for guests convenience. The kitchen was well stocked and the master upstairs was very comfortable. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

The place was absolutely amazing. The trail was wonderful that went around the property and it was in a very good location for the orchard and downtown Bayfield and kayaking. John was a great host. Would definitely stay here again.

This was an amazing stay! It is a beautiful home, the surroundings are so peaceful and quiet. There are 10 acres to roam on. Both beds are so comfortable, everything is very clean and well kept. The kichen is well stocked, we had everything we needed for cooking. The host John is very accommodating and knowledgeable. We definitely hope to stay here again!

Friend and bears

We arrived at the house mid-afternoon and met with John, the host, immediately. He gave us a quick run through the house and said "if you need me call, otherwise I will be around if need be". This did not last long, later that afternoon we heard a knock on the door, some bears, a mother and 3 cubs, were feeding below his house and he wanted to know if we wanted to see them. We immediately grabbed the phones and followed, What a great experience. We saw John one more time, just for a moment and went on our way. A person couldn't ask for a better host. The house was perfect for us, clean and well kept. It is in a beautiful setting and close enough to town to get there quickly, yet you feel like you are way out there. John makes you feel like a long lost friend, and "his" bears are amazing.

Weekend Getaway

We had a lovely time at this beautiful place. It was so peaceful and quiet with nature surrounding the property. Our host was amazing and gave us lots of tips about the local hiking and sites to see. We hiked every day as well as combed the beaches for beautiful rocks and agates. Next time, if it's a bit warmer, we might try kayaking to the beautiful redcliff caves. We walked there but kayaking looks so much more adventurous!

Thank you so much for your incredible property! John met us as we drove in. He took us on a brief tour of the place and showed us how to work the heat and air. He also went out of his way to get us crockpot to use! He gave us great directions to avoid the festival traffic too. All in all we had a great time at the perfect location!

John is retired from the Houston Police Department where he served for 28 years. He joined the force in 1982 and after 4 years of working Patrol, he joined the SWAT Team and remained with that division until his retirement in 2010. John has worked with Secret Service and other dignitary protection groups serving four presidents and numerous high profile individuals. He has a thorough understanding of one’s privacy and security and strives to ensure it.

John Murphy is no stranger to the north. John was actually born in Racine, Wisconsin and grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in Muskegon, Michigan. After 30 years in the big city, it was time to retire. While John was vacationing in Northern Wisconsin, one of the locals suggested visiting Bayfield; so headed north to the city of Bayfield. Within the first few minutes of arriving, John knew he was back “Up North”; quaint shops; islands; friendly residents; and, of course, the big water - Lake Superior. It was like coming home. With sights set high, John headed back to Houston, sold his home and moved to Bayfield in August of 2010. Their new home and Carriage House Rental is situated on 10 beautifully wooded acres just one mile north of town.

Located on 10 wooded acres with a 1/2 mile hike/jog trail that runs along the property with it's own creek. John has assorted wildlife on the property including Black Bear, Bobcat, Deer, Coyote, Wolf, Raccoon, and Fox. The Carriage house is equipped with all the comforts of home and if you need any special requests, we can have it for you in minutes. You will have a 600 sq ft heated garage where you can store your equipment instead of being one of the many unfortunate visitors that have to keep all their toys on or attached to the vehicles. Located next to the Apostle Islands which is controlled by the National Park Service. You will find Seacaves along the islands and mainland. Kayaking, canoeing and boating is a lifetime experience along the Islands. You can paddle to one of the 21 islands and hike or even camp in areas pristine with nature and solitude.
After experiencing the thousands of acres of nature; walk, ride or drive one mile into town and shop at all the shops or eat at one of many restaurants while looking over Lake Superior and the islands. Want more culture?? Take in a show at the Big Top Chautauqua or at Stage North. You will see famous performers as well as our local artists. Don't forget the Bayfield Apple Festival or the Dog Sled Races or the Bayfield in Bloom or the Fall Harvest Celebration or the Blessing of the Fleet or 'whew!'
