Nice place but extra charges not transparent

The property manager was very unhelpful.
The vacation rental was spotless.
I was happy with the location.
I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.
Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental.

The place is comfortable and very nicely decorated. However, I received a separate charge from them after paying in full for 20 cents because of some county tax increase on vacation rentals. We also stayed at another house on the island for 2 days as part of this same trip but they did not charge the additional tax. I just received an email stating they were charging me extra for it. I thought that was tacky as 20 cents surely could be absorbed by the high price we already paid to stay here. Then when we asked for an early check in I was told twice, once on the phone and once in text message, that the price was $60 for early check in, no mention of additional taxes, and then my card was charged $75 for early check in! They said they had to charge tax. Why didn’t they tell me this on the phone? I wouldn’t have wanted to check in a couple hours early for that amount, but I wasn’t given a choice, again just charged my card and they wouldn’t remove the extra $15 charge even when I talked to them about it. I felt like they took any opportunity to charge more than agreed upon. Tacky. I don’t mind paying a high price to stay somewhere I want at the agreed upon rates, but I do mind when they aren’t transparent about charges. Also, there were giant ants everywhere even in my bed.
