This is the review I never imagined I’d have to write — mostly because we never actually got to stay here. After booking and fully paying for this rental more than two months in advance, we were blindsided just four days before check-in by a message from the host claiming we hadn’t paid and that our reservation would not be honoured. Except we had paid — months earlier — and had the VRBO confirmation and credit card records to prove it. VRBO confirmed the payment as well and repeatedly tried to contact the host, who apparently couldn’t be bothered to respond. In the end, VRBO cancelled the reservation and refunded us.Unfortunately, a refund doesn’t magically solve the problem when you’re four days away from a trip and nearly every comparable rental is already booked and prices are 3 times what they were at the time of the original booking. We were forced into a last-minute scramble and had to settle for the only place left within reach of our budget — which turned out to be exactly what you’d expect from a desperate last-minute booking. The whole situation put a major damper on our trip. Interestingly, the property appeared to be booked through another website for the same time frame, which certainly makes the timing feel suspicious. If that’s what happened, it’s incredibly disappointing behaviour from a host. Travellers beware.
