A warm welcome to the Schoonorther Mühlen in the heart of East Frisia. You’ve found a vacation home unlike any other. The
—a windmill over 200 years old near the historic fishing village of Greetsiel—was decommissioned
and has served as a vacation home since 2009 for families, dogs, couples, or guests who simply want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Spanning four floors,
old wooden beams dominate the interior. The old wooden staircases have also been preserved. Spaces like this are otherwise found only in museums. A true adventure filled with peace, coziness, and charm.
Some time ago, a sunroom was added, inviting guests to enjoy breakfast, family game nights, or simply to sit together comfortably. The addition also provides direct access to the sunny terrace with its adjoining garden and large trees that provide shade in the summer. During the winter months, after long walks in the characteristic North Sea weather, you can warm your feet in front of the rustic fireplace.
The mill is located on a dead-end street, offering an unobstructed view of the forest, meadows, and East Frisian wildlife.
Please note: The original wooden stairs are not suitable for small children or people with limited mobility
. Parents must decide for themselves whether their children can use them safely.
The height under some of the beams is as low as 1.70 m—risk of hitting your head!
In addition, bed linens and towels can be rented for a cleaning fee of 25 € per person. Please request this in advance.
A long and eventful history: The Schoonorth Mill was built in 1804.
To achieve greater height, it was built directly into the dike, which
still ran through this area at that time. Around 1950, most of this dike was removed. The so-called “Gallerieholländer” mill served for many
years, while ownership
changed through inheritance and sale. In 1951, the mill was severely damaged by a heavy storm. The miller at the time ceased wind-powered operation and had the sails and upper section dismantled. When mill operations ceased entirely, the massive mill stump was converted into a residence in 1975. In 2009, the bathroom was renovated and the mill was restored. The massive
beams, wooden stairs, and floors have been preserved and create a
unique atmosphere. Enjoy your vacation at the Schoonorther Mill.
