The primeval valley of the Elbe with its fertile marshes subsequently formed at the borders of these earth upheavals. The place name Marschacht also refers to these once marshy landscapes. With the start of dyke construction at the beginning of the 12th century, attempts were made to tame the river. The mighty power of the elements can still be seen today during the regular floods.
