Spectacular Location, But Needs More Attention to Details

The location of this property is spectacular, right on Playa Hermosa in Puntarenas province. The beach here is steep and the waves are powerful - the sound of the crashing waves is hypnotizing. The condo is as described, with a great kitchen, comfortable beds, good air conditioning and water pressure, and fast and reliable Internet. This particular unit does not have a view of the ocean. The owner aludes to this in the listing by saying it "faces the mountain", but what that means is that the view is of the parking lot, and instead of hearing the sounds of the waves crashing at night, you hear the air brakes of big trucks on the nearby highway. It didn't bother us and we did not expect an ocean view from the ground floor, so I say this just to clarify for prospective renters. Unfortunately the condo is very "tired" and needs a lot of attention and TLC. The walls are badly cracked and in need of paint. Many scrapes and scuffs make the place look dirty. We found seven non-working light bulbs, including two of the three lamps over the island in the kitchen. When we pointed this out to Jeff, the owner, at check-in, his response was "there are plenty of other lights". For a five-night stay we had three bath towels, one hand towel, and one washcloth, and the towels provided had both the thickness and the softness of sandpaper. We were also provided two rolls of toilet paper, a dish scrubber that was long past its useful life, and no soap to wash dishes. At check-in, Jeff met us with an old-school credit card imprinter, and he imprinted our credit card using a carbon paper slip and asked us to sign this blank slip as a damage deposit. We found this odd that we had to essentially sign a "blank check" in order to stay there. There is also an odd rule about no drinks in the pool. If you want to enjoy a beer while enjoying the pool, you have to get out of the pool, take a drink, and then get back into the pool, leaving your drink behind. We also found it strange that for a complex of six condos, with a maximum occupancy of at least 20 people, there are exactly two lounge chairs at the pool. In summary, I think Jeff is taking "Pura Vida" a little too far. If he's going to charge $250 USD/night in the off-season, he needs to step up regarding maintenance and ammenities. We shouldn't have to drive into Jacó to buy toilet paper and supplies to wash dishes, and we shouldn't have to move light bulbs around in order to see.

The views from this property were amazing! The beach was not crowded but plenty of food/bar options within walking distance. The property was meticulously maintained.

A perfect little piece of paradise

We spent our last 6 days of our trip to Costa Rica in this lovely place. Jeff, the owner was very helpful and accomodating. He answered all of our questions very knowledgeably and thoroughly. He was happy step in when we asked, but was also very respectful of our privacy. The unit was spacious, very clean and had everything we could ever need. The air conditioning was a dream and worked perfectly. Some of the units in the building are owned by private owners, who were also very helpful and friendly. The pool was a dream and it is literally steps to the beach and fantastic waves. Just a 5 minute walk up the beach, there are several restaurants that are fun and have a decent nightlife that is a little tamer than in jaco and kid friendly. Just a 5 minute drive to downtown jaco if that is more your style. Jeff's wife and daughter were delightful and it was always a treat to see them around the property. All in all, a fabulous way to end our vacation! Thanks!!

Great place on the beach!

We stayed for a relaxing week, and this condo and Priscilla made us feel welcome and at home! We were in the back condo, and our only regret was not having a beach view, but the yard was beautiful and only a few feet from the door. The perfect place to sit and read with my morning coffee! This is a quiet area, which I loved, but is also a 5 minute walk to several beachfront restaurants. Priscilla suggested Vida Hermosa and it was so good, we went twice! The condo is well furnished and looks just like the pictures. The bed in the master room (the only one we used) was SUPER comfortable! That’s important for me on a trip! The kitchen has what you need for cooking supplies, but there could be some updates (cutting board, toaster both have been well loved), but there was a blender for pineapple smoothies and the ice maker worked! The AC worked perfectly and felt great after a day outside.The gardener Luis cut down some of the coconuts and opened two for some fresh coconut water! I felt like if there was anything we really needed, Priscilla would have found it for us. Fair warning about the beach in hot, dry months....from 10am until after 4pm DO NOT WALK IN THE SAND BAREFOOT OR WITH FLIP FLOPS ONLY! That volcanic sand is hot! We put our close toed shoes on after learning the hard way on day one! This beach is beautiful and quiet with amazing sunsets right from the front yard. Thanks for helping us embrace the Pura Vida!

the pictures not doing justice at all!!!! we had the best time .the codo was big and spotless. Jeff ,was extremely helpful. and the nicest host(I told him i wanna be him :)) the condo is on the beach .

Disappointed with view from condo window

Condo was dull and tired looking, but the outside was beautiful and the view was spectacular overlooking beach. Great bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Amazing property right on the beach- Paradise!

Jeff and Priscilla were wonderful hosts for our 4 day amazing stay in Playa Hermosa. Photos are exactly as the property was found. We spent most of our time at the beach, in the pool, or out enjoying Costa Rica. There are several restaurants that you can walk to along the beach and they were all excellent! Jeff and Priscilla helped us with daily tours including surfing, ATVing, water falls and a catamaran tour. What an amazing vacation for our family of four. We will definitely be coming back for more Pura Vida!

The best place to stay in Playa Hermosa.

Jeff was a great Host. The condo was very nice very clean. Plenty of space, very comfortable. A/C was plenty cold. We had an epic stay. So relaxing to be able walk just a few steps to the surf break and watch the sets from the swimming pool. We loved it. Can’t wait to stay there again. I’ve lived and traveled in Costa Rica since the 90’s and this one of the nicest places I’ve stayed. Great accommodations make for a great surf trip. So, Thanks for the great accomdations Jeff. Way to carve out a perfect slice of Paradise !

Property was fine, not so much owner

So looking forward to staying here.We stayed at 4 different locations on our vacation and I will be reviewing them all. This is my only negative(i don't really like doing negative reviews). This review will be more about an experience than the actual unit we stayed in. Upon our arrival and not knowing the guy has another unit for rent with an ocean view, we decided to UPGRADE(not cancel). We agreed on the price, no problem. Then he tells us he is also going to charge us a cancellation fee. What?! Generally in this type of business when you upgrade(for more $$) there is NO cancellation fee. Pure GREED, GREED, GREED. Left me a little sour. He also told us you get 2 rolls of toilet paper, after that, you are on your own. Also, NOT provided were paper towels and dish soap. Really?! CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP. Although the place was decent, I would not do business with this owner again.

It has all the potential to be a really awesome place to stay. Way over priced for what you get.

There was no formal checking in, to inventory things. They required a signed blank credit card slip and would not return at check out, because the maid has to do inventory and I was informed my card would be charged at a later date for damages or the slip would be shredded. I have stayed in many VRBO properties and this has never happened. Therefore, we really didn’t know what all they check. We were also told we are to provide our own toilet paper and soap to wash the dishes, yet the dishes are to be washed before we leave. This explains why every dish that we removed from the pantry was dirty. The air conditioner does not work very well, as by my standards. It would blow air just not real cold, we never were able to get the condo below 74°. Now some good, this is one of the most comfortable beds I’ve slept on in Costa Rica. The outside landscaping was pretty awesome, the pool overlooking the ocean was incredible. We felt safe at all times.

Cuando llegamos nos recibio Pricila, el lugar es amplio y muy limpio, excelente para 4 personas, nosotros eramos 5 y la que durmio en el sillon no fue muy comodo, ya que el colchon es super delgado La palaya es preciosa En general muy confortable y muy recomendable Gracias Pricila y Jeff

Amazing spot on the beach

We stayed at this property in March 2017. It was just two of us, but the condo had plenty of room and would be perfect for a family or a group of friends. The location was phenomenal -- right on the beach, separated only by a warm pool and a patch of grass (perfect to picnic under a palm tree or lie in the hammock). Playa Hermosa has black sand and HUGE waves -- we aren't surfers, but I imagine that for those who are this spot would be ideal. We just enjoyed the relatively empty beach and had a ton of fun playing in the waves. If you are coming with small children, you would have to be extra careful in the waves or walk up or down the beach to find a calmer area. The beach in Jaco seemed calmer, but Hermosa is a MUCH cleaner and less populated beach (Playa Jaco was better for...people watching). The condo is a short drive to Jaco, where you can go for shopping, tons of restaurants and tour companies. Also, a short drive up the coast takes you to Villa Caletas, which is the MOST amazing spot to have a drink while watching the sunset. A few things to note. First, the kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans and other kitchen necessities but no paper products (paper towels, etc.) or dish soap. Just something to keep in mind that you'll have to buy along with your groceries as you plan to cook. Also, there is a building resident who occasionally smokes on a terrace right next to the pool -- if you are very sensitive to smoke, this might not be the place for you (we don't like smoke but it didn't ruin our experience). Overall, this is the perfect spot and we would definitely return!

Better than expected

Stayed here for the last night of our Costa Rican trip and it was a perfect way to end a great vacation. The unit is very spacious and very clean with comfortable beds and nice bathrooms. The unit would be great anywhere but this location makes it fantastic- right on the beach. The pool is very pleasant with views of the ocean -and the hammock was fun. Saw the friendly Iguana near the pool. The property is very well maintained and Jeff was pleasant and helpful in booking and during our stay. Don't hesitate it is a great choice!

WOW.... just WOW!

I don't usually write reviews but Jeff (the property manager) and the location exceeded all expectations. This is a lengthly review but I just want to cover exactly how the location made me feel. We arrived a little later than expected but that was no problem as Jeff was ready for us when we got there (we didn't have a cell phone to call him to let him know we would be late). The condo was beautiful!! Nice tile floors, beautiful bathrooms, comfortable beds, nice porch area, modern kitchen with all appliances. Now if all of that wasn't amazing enough it is also the best location in Hermosa. Walking distance to Bowies Point, Vista Hermosa, Backyard bar, and all the other restaurants/shops in hermosa. Hermosa is a few mile stretch of beach with different rental options along the whole beach but all the shops and restaurants are within the first mile. (The first two restaurants mentioned were suggested by Jeff and turned out to be the best two restaurants in the area). Every morning I woke up, walked 15 feet from the front door to the beach and looked at the waves. If my friends and I chose not to surf all day, we followed Jeff's suggestions on some rainforest hikes. Because of this we saw the most beautiful waterfall I have ever seen and there was only 6 other people there (Nauyaca Waterfalls). You could swim in the pool at the bottom of the falls! The wildlife in the area is quite abundant (great bird watching) and there are iguanas everywhere in hermosa, they are like the squirrels of my area (florida). If you want to experience some city life for shopping or night life for partying, jaco is a 5 minute drive up the road. Every afternoon my friends and I would surf right outside the property literally 50 yards away from the front door and watch the most beautiful sunsets, which if we were not in the ocean to witness we were in the pool to watch. The property felt extremely safe and if you stay make sure to say hi to Larry and Carrol, two very nice residence who are often on the back porch near the pool (which is a really cool pool and looks just as beautiful as the picture). I have rambled on enough and I could go on for another hour! Jeff took great care of us and was involved as little or as much as we wanted. We will definitely be back!!! Thank you Jeff! P.S. The location is super easy to find once you make it to Hermosa!

Great Location & Lots of room

If you want to watch sunsets right on the beach this is the place to be. The condo is just steps from the ocean. The unit is large and quite modern. The outside pool is refreshing, however it could have been a bit cooler! The condo could have been supplied with a few more amenities such as dish soap, can opener and other basic kitchen supplies. Jeff was good to get us another frying pan and some clothes hangers. You can easily walk to many different restaurants/bars in the area. The beach is nice and long and also easy to walk.

Best place to stay in all of Playa Hermosa!

This place is even nicer than the photos make it look and very spacious! Iguanas and macaws everywhere and fresh coconuts right on the beach! I will definitely be coming back to stay here!

Best Place to Stay in Playa Hermosa (and Jaco)

Fantastic small resort right on one of the best beaches in the area. The condo's are amazing with high end appliances in the kitchen, nice furniture, modern bathrooms and very comfortable beds with great linens. They have a large flat screen TV in the living room, central air, keyless entry, modern safe, walk in closets in both bedrooms. It's more like staying at a (rich) friends house than a vacation rental. The grounds and pool area are beautiful and unique, something you would see on a tour or in a magazine. A little after 5PM is sunset time where you get one of the best sunset views in the area. A great time to take sunset pictures and visit with the other guests. There was a resident Iguana that was out everyday by the pool when I was there. It didn't mind getting it's picture taken or sharing the outside shower area with you. The owners (Jeff and Priscilla) are great to work with and made my stay here even better. They were very helpful getting me setup at the property and answering all of my questions about Costa Rica and the area. There are also restaurants and small stores walking distance from the resort. Give the Plaza Resort a try, you will be happy you did.
