My recent guest, Chris, gave me a one star rating which I believe was undeserved and unfair.
Let me explain:
I enjoy hosting my guests in Costa Rica. This is a beautiful, though sometimes challenging
environment. Our recent rainy season in November, especially, was non-stop rain,100% soil
saturation and humidity. It wasn’t particularly warm. Yet, Chris, as per his wife, likes to run the
ac around 60 degrees. Though we ask our guests to conserve electricity by turning off fans and
ac when they are not in the casita, these guests left the ac running for several days, full tilt. I
had to study condensation and dew point to understand what happened when they finally
turned off the ac, and left the casita closed up, for a full day away. Condensation formed on the
ceiling, ran down the walls, and seeped up from the ceramic tile floors. The water stained the
walls. There were puddles on the floor. When they returned that evening, they texted me at
5:30 pm to say they had already booked another accommodation, in another town up the
coast and would be leaving the next day, because everything was wet. Since I live on the
property, I was able to respond immediately. I was shocked to see the condensation
everywhere.
I brought them fresh sheets, as requested.
I mopped and mopped but the condensation kept coming up from the floor. The next morning
as they had announced, they left. My worker and I worked for days drying, scrubbing and
washing walls, ceilings, floors and all bedding and rugs.
Chris thought they should be refunded for the remainder of their reservation. My cancellation
rules are firm and additionally, it took days, and lots of work to make the casita rentable again.
Chris awarded me one star. I believe he was angry and thought he should be refunded his
money for the days he cut short on his reservation. Their excessive use of the ac caused the
problem. They did not adhere to my house rules, nor respect the cancellation rules. They
reserved another place, before even informing me of the problem. They gave me no chance to
address the problem. As I said, Costa Rica, the climate and the terrain, can be challenging. You
can either embrace it or cut and run.
My new star rating now, will not reflect how much I care and embrace all of my guests in this beautiful place.
