For those needing FULL air conditioning, not just a window unit in the living room, our split system cools the entire living/dining/kitchen area AND both bedrooms (individual room temp settings), eliminating hot, sleepless nights! (Most other Maui condos advertising AC have only a single window unit in the living room, leaving their bedrooms hot. So you'll definitely want to check AC details of any condos you are considering before you choose your Maui vacation lodging.)

Our uniquely situated, peaceful end unit in Kanai a Nalu's quiet northwest beachfront wing is filled with the sights, sounds, and fragrances of this sparsely developed oasis on Maui's resort coast. You'll enjoy unparalleled views of the ocean, Haleakala volcano, and Lanai, Kahoolawe, and Molokini Islands as well as the South Maui coast, watch green sea turtles swimming just off our beach. Our winter guests enjoy sighting the amazing humpback whales during their stays in Malaaea Bay, where they have their babies, from our oceanfront wall of windows and lanai! The sound of gentle waves lapping the shore will lull you to sleep after days exploring Maui or relaxing at our on-site pool or beach.
The beauty, comfort and convenience extend inside also, with soothing tropical decor, and beds so comfortable that guests tell us they want to take them home! (The luggage fees would be pretty high, though.) You can prepare anything from snacks to holiday meals in our full gourmet kitchen, and serve them up casually or in high style. Our brand new in-unit full-sized LG HE washer and dryer means you can pack lightly! Our condo is fully stocked with bed and bath linens, plentiful beach towels, and even guest bathrobes.
Our condo in peaceful, safe, family-friendly Maalaea is best enjoyed by active retirees, small groups of mature friends, families with school-aged or older children, and parties of one or two couples. Ideal for up to four guests, including any children or infants, maximum permitted occupancy is six (cribs must be rented from a local company).
The master bedroom has spectacular ocean views on two sides, top rated memory foam bed, and en suite master bath with shower. The ocean view guest bedroom has twin memory foam beds that can convert to a king; the guest full bathroom is off the hallway. Both bedrooms have closets, dressers, nightstands, their own AC, and wall-mounted LCD HD TVs (no cable in the second bedroom), and DVD or DVD/VCR. Because both large and small things matter as we rely more and more on tech, we offer free high speed wifi, free US and Canada land line, outlets with USB ports, and a fax/printer/scanner.
In the closets, you'll find beach equipment such as umbrella, chairs, cooler, etc.. Our spacious, tropically decorated living room provides abundant comfortable seating, and wall-mounted large-screen HD LCD TV with cable channels and DVD, and opens to a private, covered, oceanfront lanai. Throughout the condo, you’ll find original Hawaiian art, and decorator touches. Parking for one car in our on site lot is free; cars must be registered at the desk
Our beautifully landscaped resort is lush with tropical flower gardens and fruit trees, and grassy lawns edging the first steps of Sugar Beach, although the sand is more sparse since some major storms. The resort offers a solar-heated freshwater pool, barbecues, and picnic/lounging areas, all beside the ocean. From the nearby beach park, you can walk along Maui's longest sandy stretch-- gorgeous, unspoiled Maalaea/Sugar Beach-- as it curves past Kealia Pond Wildlife (bird) Refuge down to North Kihei.
In our well sheltered part of the Pacific (tucked behind the islands of Lanai, Molokini and Kahoolawae) you can enjoy boogie boarding, snorkeling, or swimming in the warm, gentle surf breaking over the very gradually sloping ocean floor. Our resort's name, Kanai a Nalu, means "Gentle Surf" in Hawaiian. (Nonetheless, the nearby famous annual "Freight Train" wave draws surfers worldwide during its annual appearance - so you can surf here as well!) When it's time for lunch or dinner, the beautiful granite faced beachside charcoal and gas barbecues make it easy to grill up a feast, which you can take back to the condo or enjoy at the picnic tables beside the ocean.
At our condo, in Maui's most convenient resort coast location, you will be staying not only on right on the ocean, but just 15-20 minutes from Iao Valley State Park, abundant golf facilities, Maui's major airport, Costco, Target and other stores to "shop in" your "must haves", Kaanapali and Wailea, and you'll be within walking distance of the Maui Ocean Center, Maalaea Marina, the Harbor Shops, and a variety of restaurants. It takes us one and three quarters hours to drive to Haleakala summit from the condo, and a little over twenty minutes to the start of "the Road to Hana".
Maalaea lies within the driest and sunniest microclimate in Maui, yet is kept comfortable by tradewind breezes. (Our area is technically desert; in fact, you will see cacti growing on the slopes just mauka of the condo,)
If you are celebrating an important occasion, we would love to help you find ways of making your stay, from your first step inside the condo, extra special! Advance planning is needed for special touches, as things have to be ordered and shipped to Maui ahead of time, so it is great to discuss these ideas when you are making your reservation.
Just a few words about some limitations on staying with us: There are resort-wide quiet hours, indoors and out, between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., and all guests (including young children) are expected to comply. NO smoking or animals of any kind for any reason are permitted in our condo or on its lanai. Condo and lanai furniture and other items must not be repositioned unless for safety, and no condo items other those for beach use may be taken outside the condo. Large sports equipment (kiteboards, bicycles, etc.), must be stored outside, not inside, our condo or on the lanai.
While we happily accept bookings through VRBO and affiliated websites, we need to communicate with all prospective guests BEFORE we will approve any reservation request, because after owning our condo for over 20 years we have many returning guests whose bookings in progress may not yet appear on the calendar you see online. Also, we will need to verify your invoice and send you a rental agreement which you must return to us to complete your reservation.
Please see our rate calendar for nightly rates and length of stay requirements, which vary by season. Please note that it IS possible to rent the full holiday season with a minimum 20 night stay-- please ask us. Short stays can be accepted year 'round if we have fewer days open than "required minimum". Stated rates apply for up to four guests. We do have an additional folding mattress that can be placed on the second bedroom floor for a third person (best for a child). A rented crib or pack and play can be placed in the condo. Additional charges will be incurred for the full stay per each additional person, whether 0 or 100 years of age, staying in the condo for any part of the stay, We do not offer discounting from published rates, other than our built in long stay discount, In particular we do not discount "last minute" stays. Fees are subject to change because Maui does so often.
It is best that you wait for us to send your rental agreement and invoice to review before entering your booking request or attempting to make payment. YOU WILL NEED TO READ, SIGN, iNITIAL AND RETURN THE RENTAL INFO/AGREEMENT WE EMAIL TO YOU. OUR RENTAL AGREEMENT TERMS WILL APPLY FULLY REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT YOU READ/SIGN/RETURN the AGREEMENT BEFORE OR AFTER RESERVING THROUGH VRBO. We therefore cannot provide refunds for cancelled or modified stays, regardless of cause, so recommend you purchase travel insurance.

Aloha! We've just reopened our condo calendar for bookings by Maui visitors starting 4/1/2024, after closing it to vacationers to host fire recovery workers for months. We recently confirmed that FEMA no longer needs our vacation rental, so to re-fill our calendar while helping you plan a super affordable near term getaway, we are offering a huge discount for bookings through mid-May-- after that, we are offering substantially, but less, discounted seasonal pricing up until the holiday season.
We are Seattle professionals, now mostly retired, who--like you, treasure our far too rare vacation time with loved ones. Our Maui condo has given us wonderful memories, and sharing it with our guests has been a great pleasure, knowing it's become their "home away from home" too!
Our picture shows us (with kids at a "goofy age") visiting the summit of Haleakala a few years after we bought our Maui condo. We still love to go up there whenever we are on the island (sunset over the island from the summit, and viewing the Milky Way and meteor showers in Haleakala's night sky are some of our favorite views on Maui!)
We've celebrated lots of big events there, enjoyed just about all the excursions and activities the island has to offer, and still get excited when the plane comes in for its approach at Kahului airport. We know that even if it is pouring rain at the airport, chances are it will be sunny at our condo only 10 miles across the island, because in the Hawaiian islands, microclimates are important-- and the one that is home to our resort is actually a desert. It does rain there sometimes-- but not too often! We love the trade wind breezes cooling things off out doors, but could probably not survive inside without our wonderful split system AC throughout the condo. We put it in right after buying our place in 2004, and have replaced the entire system twice, most recently four years ago.

We "sampled" the entire island before settling on beautiful, unspoiled Maalaea, which has the driest microclimate on Maui. We could not find a lovelier, more peaceful, or safer place in a more convenient location. Kanai a Nalu is right in the middle of Maui's resort coast (the west side of the island), yet you feel away from it all. Of all the resorts in Maalaea, we fell in love with Kanai a Nalu, one of only 3 resorts there that is actually on a beach, which we are now fighting hard to preserve from the altered sand flows caused by Maalaea Marina's man-made jetty. We love the pool, the barbecues, and the spacious single floor units and the much appreciated elevators.
It is so easy to drive from the condo to virtually anywhere you want to go on the island-- from close-by necessities like the airport and Costco/other shopping, to excursions to Haleakala Summit and the road to Hana.
We looked at many condos before buying, and our jaws dropped when we walked into this one. The first thing we saw and heard was the ocean. Our second floor location afforded a great view of the waves and is situated right ON, almost IN, the ocean! When we visit the big hotels, we often wonder why anyone would pay over $1000 per night to be so much farther from the ocean than we have the privilege of living when at our condo.
Our kids have never been bored here. Just walking out the door, they can swim, snorkel, play in the pool, surf, take a walk on the beach, or walk to Maui Ocean Center plaza to visit the aquarium or Starbucks, or get some food that Mom didn't make. It's an easy drive to play golf, try out other beaches, or take part in the many tourist sports and cultural attractions on Maui. If anyone needs time out of the sun, they can turn on one of the 3 flat screen TVs (cable connected on 2, third one is for games or movies-- many DVDs, VCRs provided), read a book, or use our free wifi for browsing, mail or social media.

It is so easy to drive from the condo to virtually anywhere you want to go on the island-- from close-by necessities like the airport and Costco/other shopping, to excursions to Haleakala Summit and the road to Hana.
We looked at many condos before buying, and our jaws dropped when we walked into this one. The first thing we saw and heard was the ocean. Our second floor location afforded a great view of the waves and is situated right ON, almost IN, the ocean! When we visit the big hotels, we often wonder why anyone would pay over $1000 per night to be so much farther from the ocean than we have the privilege of living when at our condo.
Our kids have never been bored here. Just walking out the door, they can swim, snorkel, play in the pool, surf, take a walk on the beach, or walk to Maui Ocean Center plaza to visit the aquarium or Starbucks, or get some food that Mom didn't make. Aside from the joy of being 20 feet from the waves, its views of sunrises AND sunsets from our south facing lanai (furnished with table and comfy seating), we love our resort's many amenities, its perfect location and the very special environment we've created for ourselves and for you inside our condo.
We found we could not survive on Maui without AC in ALL the rooms, and so few places on Maui offer that. When we first started visiting the island, we tried staying in places with just a single window unit in the living room, and were miserable at night trying to sleep in hot bedrooms. So as soon as we bought and remodeled our condo we installed split system AC with outlets in both bedrooms and in the living/dining/kitchen area, and in 2019 installed our third, new upgraded system. It is so wonderful to sleep and cook without feeling overheated! Our guests all tell us the same.
The indoor benefits include comfortable memory foam bedding, all linens provided-- even robes, free landline calls throughout Canada and the US, free internet, a kitchen stocked "as home" with large and small appliances, cookware, serve ware, bakeware, a dishwasher, and a washer and dryer. Three flat screen TVs and DVD/VCR players and movies, games and books provide entertainment! Plus our outside views are available inside too! We've seen (seasonally) whales doing acrobatics out in the bay, and turtles popping up for air in the water right outside the door. No need for whale watching cruises here!
The location could not be better- it is tucked away in an undeveloped area of the resort coast-- peaceful, beautiful, and safe. At the same time, it is 15 minutes from the airport and all the major stores, 10 minutes form Kihei, and 20 minutes from Wailea/Makena and Lahaina/Kaanapali. You can be on a golf course after a 5 minute drive, or at Haleakala summit in under 2 hours. Vacations should be easy, and everything about this condo, resort, and location will make yours that way!
