Ducking Away Cottage
Everyone looks forward to that one week to get out of the city and relax by the waterfront - watching the boats go by, taking in the breeze, dipping a toe into the water every now and then...pretty much whatever your whims dictate. Doesn't it feel wonderful to leave that last voice mail greeting that says "I'm ducking away for the week"?
As usual, we can't resist a little word play - Ducking Away is located on Duck Bay Road in the Honey Harbour/Port Severn area on the shores of Georgian Bay. You are free to explore the greater bay with whatever watercraft you may choose, or perhaps you'd like to head inland and experience the locks and sights of the Severn River.
Ducking Away is a wonderful Ontario cottage rental 4-bedroom cottage with sunset views over the waters of Georgian Bay. The kitchen, living and dining areas are open concept and overlook the deck, yard and waterfront - so during your waking hours you will always be aware that you are no longer in the city. There are 4 bedrooms - 2 on each side of the road-facing end of the cottage, along with the main bath and an en suite off the master bedroom. There is good WiFi here, so you can brag to your friends and family what a great time you are having...and, OK, a video conference or two for work if you feel you absolutely must. Satellite TV is here so you can catch the game, the movie or keep up with your soap.
Out and about, there is lots to do - if you don't feel like cooking you could take a stroll to the nearby diner, less than a km away. Nearby Waubaushene has the basics you'd need for supplies, and Midland is just 15 minutes away for larger center amenities and restaurants. Those keen on Canadian history may also enjoy the Midland Huronia area. Cyclists? Absolutely do not forget your bikes! The Tay Shore Trail is less than 2 km from the cottage, It is hard surfaced to the west of Highway 400, so all bikes are suitable for enjoying leisurely rides through Waubaushene, Port McNicoll and Victoria Harbour. The other direction takes you to Coldwater, where the trail turns to gravel and a hybrid or mountain bike is recommended - hard-core cyclists may want to try an Orillia-and-back ride. Port Severn, just a few km to the north, offers a few small stores and restaurants, great ice cream and a service center for those keen on faster food. Boaters will want to try travelling inland to experience the Severn River system - especially the marine rail at Big Chute.
Ducking Away is great for extended and multi-generational families of up to 10 people and is the perfect location for the Cottage Country explorers! A 30-minute drive can bring you to Orillia, Penetanguishene, Midland, Barrie, Bala & Muskoka!

Waterfront
The grass yard extends to the waterfront. There may be a small beach if water levels are low. Entry to the bay is sandy/soft and deepens gradually. The presence of weeds along the shoreline and out past the channel can vary seasonally depending on water levels and temperatures however, swimming is typically enjoyed in the shallows. There is always a beach area. The size of the beach depends on water levels, winds, and storms. Currently the beach is quite large.
Trivia
The name of “Waubaushene” probably came from the native word “Wau-bau-shine” meaning rocky shore. This village once grew to a population of over 2000 residents and with the Georgian Bay Lumber Company headquartered here became a model “mill village”, similar to Victoria Harbour and other mill villages in Ontario. However, by 1920 most of the commercial pine below Sault Ste. Marie had been harvested and the company ceased operations in 1924. By end-1925 the mill was torn down and most of the company property sold. Several hundred workers were laid off and the town lost its economic base. (Source - www.tay.ca)
