Welcome to BajaMar (A Belize Tourism Board Gold Standard accredited property) . Located in desirable Mata Grande/Mata Chica neighborhood, this house was completed in 2010 and boasts pristine white sand beach, private infinity fresh water pool which overlooks to barrier reef, 3rd story viewing deck, palapa with bar, with beverage cooler & grill, 4 kayaks for guests to enjoy, and a further outdoor kitchen with gas grill, wine fridge and seating for 10 or more.

House is ideal for any reunion, small wedding or family & friends get together. House consists of 5 bedrooms, 5 baths and 4,500+ sq ft of living space. 3 of the 5 bedrooms have private kitchenettes, bathrooms, personal safes, and plasma TV's which all have private entrances.

The neighborhood offers services such as grocery store, golf cart rentals, bike rentals as well as some of the best restaurants on the island. If you are looking to get away and enjoy peace and quiet but still want to have access to services-this is the ideal location and house for you!

Group Vacation

We had all the room that we needed. Alfred took care of everything we needed and was a valuable source for giving us info that we needed. Our welcome meal was great I only wish the group had wanted a second meal cooked for us. Lots of seaweed so we couldn't go into the ocean but Alfred explained thats what happens when the wind was coming from the direction it was the whole time we were there so obviously mother nature to blame

Great vacation

BajaMar is a great house in a beautiful location. We stayed with our adult children and friends. Plenty of space for everyone and comfortable rooms.Alfred and Dianie were wonderful and attentive and helped with any arrangements or questions we had. Alfred had our golf carts waiting for us when we arrived, connected us with a dive shop, and gave us lots of guidance on local things to do. Dianie cooked us 3 amazing meals. We will definitely go back!

Nice stay in San Pedro

Had limited communication with the host, but the host referred us to the local property manager to text with. We had the option to have the property manager provide dinner for us (charge for cooking as well as separate charge for groceries), and the food was very good. Property manager was able to coordinate everything we needed and all local logistics.The property itself is nice and has a well equipped kitchen and lots of seating areas. Some of the outdoor spaces were slightly run down due to salt exposure, but not really an issue. The property is a bit far from the city (20 min drive via golf cart), but felt homely. There are some hotel restaurants and other restaurants nearby if needed.Everything was great and would certainly consider staying here again.

Family and friends getaway

Baja mar is a beautiful property located about 40 minutes (by golf cart) north of San Pedro. It was a perfect destination for a friends/family getaway. Private, on the beach, with a spacious pool, and dock access. Alfred took great care of us and Dianie cooked some amazing dinners. We can’t wait to go back.

Relax

Was a great week with many good times on the water and many great restaurants and bars. Our host also cooked us amazing meals. Had to leave a day early due to tropical storm but we will be back.

Best house in Ambergris Caye

Before we even arrived we felt cared for. The owner Tony provided incredible details about the many ways to travel to their home, what to do when you are there. Alfred the caretaker and host of the property was amazing and made our stay so special. His wife Dianie made fabulous meals for us which we highly recommend! The home and whole property were absolutely perfect for us! I couldn’t think of one thing I wish was different. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed, and Alfred went grocery shopping for us so when we arrived we were all set! We used the kayaks and snorkel gear daily which was so great to have right there. The pool is wonderful and we were in it all day and into the night. Alfred connected us with Captain Darwin to do snorkeling excursions which we loved and enjoyed being on a private charter. They catered it to what we wanted to do and see! We would definitely stay here again!

Wonderful vacation

Alfred was fabulous and booked several tours and was just a wonderful . Diane’s meals are a MUST. Just a lovely experience. The snorkeling was great and everyone is super friendly!

Superb

Baja Mar met all of our expectations. Alfred was so helpful at explaining what the most popular excursions were and set them up for us. His wife, cooked for us twice and the food was just delicious. The bedrooms on the bottom floor are large so we were very comfortable. We enjoyed all of the outdoor spaces and the location was close to many local restaurants.

Minnesotans Loving Belize

Belize is a beautiful place! The home at BajaMar was perfect, the waters blue, the clean pool, and the people were wonderful hosts in their country. Alfred, Diane and Christian were so kind and the food was always deliciously prepared. We loved that we could set up excursions with Alfred and trust that all would go well. And they did! We had a GREAT time!

Alfred!

The best part of this beach house is Alfred! He was always available & made sure we got what was needed. This beach home was great and really comfortable for 9 people & you do actually feel like you have your own private beach. Thanks again for everything Alfred.

Needs an update

The property is currently for sale by the owner and many things need to be updated. We did not have hot water in our bathroom/shower for the entire week despite multiple attempts at fixing it. Just about everything needs a refresh. The property managers (Alfred and Diane) are delightful as were the meals prepared by them.

A Great Family Experience!

As with a the other reviews for Baja Mar, this is a truly unique and wonderful place. The house is perfect for multiple families (we had 4), the food was AMAZING, and Alfred and Dianie make this an exceptional experience! Alfred was also very helpful with getting all the groceries we needed for the kids and parents, as well as arranging a surprise party with a local band (amazing!) for a 50th birthday party celebration. The house is spotless, the yard and beach are safe and comfortable and everything we needed was quickly delivered. The kids, parents and grandparents all loved the pool, as well as the snorkeling, and trying to open coconuts! Thank you for making our trip so special!

Some things great, some things not so great

The house managers, Alfred and Dianie could not be more helpful. They are friendly, always there to answer questions and provide useful information. Dianie is also a great cook and her evening meals are very fulfilling and there are always leftovers. Recommend the pineapple chicken and raisins and the fried chicken entrees. Dianie is also a marvelous baker and if celebrating a special occasion, check with her about a cake. Owners are lucky to have these two on the premises. Unfortunately, the house is falling into disrepair. Perhaps because it is for sale and owner does not want to invest in upkeep. Never the less, the grill does not work, the dishwasher needs replacement, the stove needs replacement, and in general the house needs a very thorough cleaning, pool needs serious attention and the yard needs cleaning and replacement of dead shrubs and plants. The photos are of what BajaMar once was.

Hidden Gem

What a wonderful VRBO property! We booked our family of 4 with our friends, who are a family of 5. We all fit very comfortably, with room to spare. There was excellent communication prior to arrival. Alfred and his wife are wonderful to welcome our group, offer grocery and dinner options, help arrange excursions, you name it! Tony is a wonderful host and keeps up with details. There was no "welcome book" like most properties have, but you don't need one! Alfred is full of helpful suggestions and knowledge and there is little to be done upon leaving. We enjoyed the beach front (some seaweed doesn't stop us), dock, kayaks, pool, and outdoor eating areas. The mosquitos are insane, so bring your repellant, but they stay away most of the day. We rented a golf cart for the duration of our stay, which is a necessity if you plan to leave the property. An easy 15-20 minute drive gets you into San Pedro. Secret Beach is closer. Plenty of dive sites are north of town, so not everything took us into town. We were picked up at the dock for several excursions we did, including SCUBA diving, Shark Ray Alley, Hol Chan, snorkeling with sharks, and a day trip to Caye Caulker. This is a great property for friends and families if you like adventure and really experiencing the area.

Great home for groups

Baja Mar was the perfect home for our group. The layout of the house is great for groups of couples or singles considering that the beds can be arranged as kings or single beds. There were ample seating areas with amenities that made the stay feel very comfortable! The dock in front of the home was ideal for early morning cups of coffee overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the wonderful reef that you can see the waves breaking on just a few hundred yards away. The host as well as Alfred and Dianie made the stay unforgettable! Alfred was always a text away and was very easy to work with throughout our vacation. He set our group up with golf carts, and the best tour guides on the island. He truly customized our stay and made it a special and memorable experience. Dianie prepared a delicious welcome meal the evening of our arrival and I cannot recommend it enough. The grounds were kept up very well and the crystal clear pool right out the doors of the bottom floor also made the stay so much more enjoyable.

Beautiful Views and House!

The house was just as described on VRBO. Very spacious for my husband and myself, 4 adult children, and grand-daughter. The lower three bedrooms are separate from the upstairs and each has its own bathroom. The pool area was very nice and clean, with ocean view. Alfred and Dianie keep the place very nice and cleaned twice for us during our week long stay. It was great to have clean linens after a long excursion day. Alfred has great recommendations for excursions and is very accommodating. He took care of us with any questions and help with golf carts, luggage, etc. Dianie cooked us a welcome meal that was excellent! The one and only thing that was not great was the long, very bumpy golf cart drive down a very rutted road to get the house from San Pedro town and most restaurants. Otherwise, I would highly recommend for a beautiful relaxing vacation!

Beautiful House, Excellent Caretakers

Nine of us stayed here last February over Super Bowl week-end and the week following. The house is beautiful--bedrooms spacious, tons of deck space, awesome infinity pool. Alfred and Diane are the caretakers and they're really great--friendly, knowledgeable, and really good at their jobs. They cooked for us a couple times while we stayed there, and the meals were awesome. We should have taken them up on their cooking offer more days than we did. There's a dock off the property, so tour/scuba pickups are easy. You just walk to the end of your dock and wait for a boat. There are dogs everywhere near San Pedro, and we loved that. Alfred and Diane have two awesome little ones who will unobtrusively come by from time to time if you're friendly to them. Other dogs will adopt you for a day if you seem amenable to their company. The house comes with floaty things to facilitate cocktail drinking while drifting around the pool. The scuba diving out of San Pedro is obviously awesome. The dirt track to town is great scenic fun and you will want to rent a golf cart or two to drive it. All told, the place is great and the location is lovely. A group of us go to a different warm place every year in the winter and it was a little hard to not choose a second year here. It was that good.

Beautiful location and spacious but dated home

We spent 2 weeks at Bajamar, with 6 adults and 4 very small kids the first week, and 5 adults with 2 kids the second. The great: Great amount of space for multiple families, and the outdoor areas were amazing. The kids lived in the wonderful pool! The view is beyond photos, with a rare sandy beach for Ambergris. Brand new flat top grill! Diane made us 10 meals and each of them was wonderful. Alfred and Diane needed to be away unexpectedly for a few days and kindly ordered a cake from a local bakery for my daughter's birthday. Getting picked up at the dock in front of the house for excursions was great. The fine: We needed help basically every other day - with the large sliding doors, oven, an air conditioner, butane, the internet, etc. Alfred was quick to work to fix things if he could, but couldn't always. The bad: We had several power outages while there. The vast majority were island wide, so not under the control of the house. However, Alfred was working to install a generator and turned off power for 2 hours our last evening at the house. He'd warned me there would be an outage before it went out but I assumed it would brief. It interrupted packing, and more importantly bedtime with two little kids, which without air conditioning or lights (again) was extremely frustrating when we were leaving 12 hours later. The house is showing age in the sea air and could use a really deep clean/replacement of rusting fixtures. Interior areas are definitely showing heavy wear.

BajaMar Beautiful!

Four adults, two college students and one high school freshman enjoyed a perfect week at BajaMar. The house easily accommodated our crew in great comfort. Everything you read in other reviews and see in photos is as advertised--actually nicer. The beds are very comfortable, the linens high quality and the house has every imaginable necessity. Truly--you can't go wrong. We particularly enjoyed sitting on the upper deck facing the ocean, enjoying the ever present breeze (March has a steady easterly wind blowing in) while reading books and relaxing in the warmth (82 degrees the entire week). I did find myself distracted, however, by the incredible view of waves breaking on the reef ~700 yards away. To see the waves, one has to look past the azure blue sea in between--tough problem. Should you choose to be more ambitious, the four kayaks offer an easy and fun way to explore the nearby reef. After a ~500 yd paddle, you approach the reef and can tie up your kayak to a buoy near the reef (you can actually stand in ~4' of water at the buoy). From here we snorkeled all over and saw a surprising amount of marine life around the reef--very cool! For event better snorkeling (we also went scuba diving), you should hire someone to take you to Mexican Rocks, Hol Chan Marine and Shark / Ray alley. All really fun spectacles in water ranging from 10'-30'. Other adventures we experienced: Secret beach, Fly fishing for tarpon and bonefish on the flats (bay side of Ambergris), Caye Caulker (touristy but fun stroll through town) and walks on the beach to various bars and restaurants. ALL of the events were organized and arranged by Alfred who is AMAZING. He was always available, extremely knowledgable, and his recommendations never let us down. He also has numerous stories which are guaranteed to entertain. Alfred's wife, Dianie cooked us a welcome dinner--which was fantastic--and made things very relaxed on our arrival day. We had also pre-ordered supplies from Mata Grande grocery. The order was perfect, delivered as promised and drinks were cold upon our arrival. We mostly cooked our own breakfasts and a few lunches but went out for dinner. Rojo lounge , just two docks north, is a very laid back beach bar with excellent food. Have fun with the massive jenga game! Two docks further north is Mata Chica a more stylish / chic resort that offers excellent food and a great vibe. The list of places you can go is endless. Have fun!

While all beautiful places have their individual charms, nowhere on earth has given me the same sense of a yearning to return than here at BajaMar on Ambergris, the “Isla Bonita”.
As a brief background to the house, at the end of 2007 I bought the land, five miles north of San Pedro Town, to build BajaMar as a tropical home. The intention was to enable my wife and I to escape the cold winters of Europe; that I might fly-fish the surrounding salt water flats during my retirement and the decision was made with some vague and eccentric middle aged whim of investment. While the conceptual layout of the house was mine, the fine architectural design is entirely to the credit of local architect, Sue Courtenay. The house was completed in 2010 after a prolonged and challenging construction period of some two and a half years. Every single material for the construction was brought to the site by barge.
