Björnskog Stuga in Scandia, Minnesota
Tucked in the quiet embrace of forest, our hand-hewn Swedish log cabin is a haven of calm, designed with a perfect blend of hygge comfort and timeless Scandinavian elegance. The natural wood beams and weathered timber walls bring a sense of grounding, while the minimalistic Swedish design brings an air of simplicity. Inside, natural materials, soft textiles, and muted tones create a serene retreat, with every corner inviting you to slow down, breathe, and rest at ease.
Originally built by Swedish immigrants in ca. 1860, the historic cabin blends rustic charm with sophisticated design. Vintage touches pair seamlessly with modern amenities such as a fully equipped kitchen, in-floor radiant heat, high-speed internet, a large-screen TV, and a stylish ceramic-tiled shower.
On the exterior, a steep gabled roof, original hand-hewn logs, and white-trimmed windows represent classic Swedish style. Dovetail corners -- visible both inside and out -- add a distinctive charm and structural strength without the need for nails. The logs are secured with hand-carved wooden pegs.
A cozy loft bedroom is tucked under a steeply pitched ceiling that features hand-peeled tamarack rafters and live-edge roof boards. This spacious room includes two queen beds, a chair that unfolds into a single bed, and a cozy reading chair.
The vaulted Great Room includes a couch, chairs, desk, big-screen TV, and a day bed that can be used for seating or sleeping. The room is equipped with board games and reading material.
Scandia -- located in the St. Croix River Valley -- is home of the first Swedish settlement in Minnesota and multiple historic sites. The cultural gem Gammelgården Museum celebrates the Swedish immigrant story and includes two log settlers' cabins and the town's original log church. The Hay Lake School Museum showcases a one-Room schoolhouse attended by local kids into the 1960s.
Whether you're relaxing indoors or exploring the surrounding area, this enchanting cabin is the perfect getaway for guests looking to unwind and create lasting memories. The cabin is located 2.5 miles from William O'Brien State Park on the St. Croix River, 6 miles to Big Marine Park Reserve, and less than a mile from two DNR Scientific Natural Areas with hiking trails on the river bluff. Enjoy gorgeous hikes, kayaking, and nearby cross country ski trails. The beautiful Rustic Roots winery is less than two miles away and also includes forested hiking trails.
Scandia is midway between Stillwater and Taylors Falls on the St. Croix River, and just south of Lindstrom and Chisago Lakes, the setting for Vilhelm Moberg's book 'The Emigrants.' The Swedish Immigrant Regional Trail starting in Chisago Lakes is another outdoor option to explore.
Whether you wish to explore Minnesota History, enjoy scenic hikes in beautiful forested Scandia - or simply relax in a cozy environment - this is the place for you. We hope you will enjoy our cabin.
PLEASE NOTE: Our cabin is unfortunately not handicap accessible, and access to the loft bedroom is via a steep staircase. Although we do not allow guests to have pets in the cabin, it's important to note that our pets sometimes spend time here. Therefore, this rental may not be appropriate for people with pet allergies.

Acerca del anfitrión
Anfitrión: Susan Rodsjo

Welcome to Scandia -- home of the first Swedish settlement in Minnesota. Having been married to a native Norwegian for 30+ years, I have embraced the Scandinavian "hygge" way of life -- cozy nooks, soft sheepskin pelts, and fluffy down comforters. I grew up in the Twin Cities -- but find myself most at home in the Scandia countryside, embraced by the forest. My husband and I enjoy visiting historic Main Street towns in both the US and Europe--and my travel goal is to visit all historic lodges at US National Parks. We enjoy camping, hiking, and downhill skiing.
Por qué eligió esta propiedad
I love the charming rural character of Scandia, as well as the unique history of the entire St. Croix River Valley. Here you will find abundant places to hike, including three nearby state parks and two DNR Scientific Natural Areas; a local winery with beautiful vistas of the river valley; nearby apple orchards; and tasty restaurants.
Qué distingue a esta propiedad
As you might guess from the name, Scandia embraces its Swedish heritage. When families emigrated here from Sweden in the 1800s, they brought with them an important skill learned in the home country: log home building. The Swedish family that originally crafted our cabin cut down the trees with an axe, hand-hewn the logs, and carved dovetail corners in the traditional Swedish style. We are proud to have saved this structure, giving it new life for another 150 years.
