The Burrow on Tucker Lake - Hike In Cabin on the Gunflint Trail

A five-minute hike through the forest leads you to the front door of The Burrow, our cozy off-grid guest cabin on a hill overlooking Tucker Lake. A unique experience on the Gunflint Trail, our hideaway provides an opportunity for solitude at the edge of the wilderness without giving up the comforts of home. A short walk down a hill to the lake gives you direct BWCA access from our private dock and opportunities for adventure and relaxation with provided snow shoes, paddle boards and a canoe.

Specifics
The Burrow is hike-in and off-grid. You should be prepared to carry everything you take in and out on your back. In winter you can walk the packed trail to the cabin without issue. Snowshoes (free with your stay) or backcountry skis are recommended to traverse the snow on the lake and beyond.

After parking at the trailhead near our home, guests take the .2-mile path as it gently meanders through woods of spruce, aspen and white pine before arriving at The Burrow. The lake is another 200 feet through the forest.

The Burrow is powered by the sun and heated with propane and wood, but still offers many modern amenities including internet. Visiting in the summer is carefree and requires little to no monitoring of the cabin's off-grid systems. A visit in the winter however will require you to monitor battery power levels and burn wood to keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature in addition to a vented, propane heater.

AT&T customers will have 2 bars of 5G service at the cabin, but the lodging also comes with a 5G capable iPad that can be used to watch movies, send messages, and create a personal hotspot to connect your devices.

The cabin's kitchen includes a two-burner stove top, a spacious mini fridge, basic kitchen utensils and everything you need to make a good cup of coffee.
NOTE: Potable water is not provided to guests. The Burrow has a sink that is operated with a foot pump that provides unheated, NON POTABLE water for doing dishes and washing up. Drinking water must be hiked in (or filtered by guests as you would in the BWCA).

The cabin's indoor bathroom uses an incinerating toilet, which might take a little getting used to but provides a superior experience to an outhouse. The bathroom also includes a wash basin that can be filled with water and a mirror.

When the seasons allow, guests can use an outdoor shower filled with water heated on the stove. In winter there is currently NO SHOWER option at the burrow. You can shower at the YMCA or Municipal Campground in Grand Marais.

Beautiful Cabin

Cabin is brand new and stocked wonderfully for an off grid cabin in the woods. We enjoyed the canoe and paddle boards on the quiet lake. The cart is is very useful for the hike the cabin(can feel a bit long if you bring heavy gear, but so worth it for the total privacy of the cabin)

Cozy Nature Experience

We stayed for a week and it was great. The cabin is a perfect cozy little thing, with a ladder leading to the sleeping loft.We saw two different families of beaver interacting from the dock. We caught 3 keeper walleye of fllf the dock in the 6pm-8pm slot, using leeches and bobbers set to about 4/5 ft depth. We saw a Pine Marten, twice, and a bunch of snowshoe hares. Cardinals, bluejays, grouse, grackles, and a host of other avian friends. Tucker lake it gorgeous and the geology of the area is unmatched.Keep your eyes peeled for flint pieces and othereta Sedimentary Gneiss based silicate rocks! The cabin was comfy and clean, good wood. The hosts have hardwood (maple) if you need it. In my case I brought a sauna tent and set it up in the crushed stone area they asked me to keep it in (fire hazard). The two hosts are both wonderful folks, attentive without being intrusive at all. Fun to chat with and laid back.

We're Casey and Don, your gracious hosts and the proprietors of The Burrow.

Don grew up in the Chicago area and was first introduced to the BWCA on canoe trips with the neighborhood moms. Casey, who hails from Louisville, agreed to give the frozen north a try after being moved to tears by the area's beauty on our first trip together to the northwoods.

In five years here, we've built two off-grid homes together with our own hands, gone on countless adventures — and even got married on the dock at The Burrow. We've found a welcoming and wonderful community on the Gunflint Trail and hope you get a chance to experience the area's warmth and hospitality, too.
