Gorgeous location, quiet stay on the New River
Camp Sophie is a lovely stay for a visit to New River Gorge Nat'l Park and Preserve, especially if you want a place more off the beaten path. It's a long, winding trip through the mountains to the place, but it's worth it. The views: GORGEOUS. Neighbors: friendly and helpful. You are right on the river, but we found fishing from the bank difficult due to trees and shrubs growing at the edge, so best to plan to fish from another location. The cabin is updated nicely and cute, with all the basics you'd need for a stay. The kitchen was especially nice, and well-stocked. We had an issue with the bed in the main room, however. The slats on the frame were too short and too few (and there was no box spring), so the mattress and I collapsed to the floor multiple times our first night. We reached out to our hosts and they responded quickly, and came to make adjustments the next day. While the new slats kept the mattress from collapsing, the bed was so incredibly creaky we never felt comfortable both sleeping in it at the same time. I ended up sleeping in one of the bunks in the kids' room. Not the end of the world, but certainly not ideal. One other drawback was a lot of ants around the place, but some of that is to be expected when you're out in a wild setting. We just swept and washed surfaces frequently. If you're looking to be away from the busyness surrounding the national park and really experiencing the natural beauty of West Virginia, Camp Sophie could be a good fit!
