Frontier Store House - With a historic cabin inside the inviting home…

Built between Scenic By-way #177 and the BNSF tracks the Frontier Store House in Matfield Green is as peaceful as can be. It started as a log cabin in 1868. Town “developer” David Mercer, after whom a nearby creek was named, built it and ran a frontier store and post office; a few years later, a stone room was added. Both the log cabin and stone room were preserved when, in the late 1880s, a two-story addition was created.

After having stood empty for more than 40 years, the Frontier Store House was beautifully restored and renewed, and became a comfortable very well insulated family retreat and guest house.
Only steps away from the tallgrass prairie and open range cattle country, this home away from home is perfect for long weekends and vacations.

Ready for a Flint Hills adventure? The tallgrass prairie surrounding Matfield Green is a national treasure worth discovering. Just north of the little town you will find Pioneer Bluffs historic ranch and The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is 20 miles north in Strong City. Cottonwood Falls is also worth your visit; check out the historic courthouse and don't forget to climb the stairs to the old jail. West of Cottonwood Falls you'll find Chase State Fishing Lake.
A wonderful daytrip is a visit to the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan, KS. Lots of informative displays and educational exhibits and a great short film about the Flint Hills will keep you captive. Just follow # 177 north.

You'll find restaurants and groceries in Strong City and Cottonwood Falls as well as in El Dorado and Emporia. NO PETS.

Wedding Weekend

Nice older style house

Enjoyed our stay there for the weekend. The train tracks are in the back yard so the trains going by woke us up so that was a little inconvenient. But other than that it was a pleasant stay!

Country Weekend

The house was as charming as it was in the pictures. We were there for a wedding at Pioneer Bluffs and the location couldn’t have been better! Our stay took us back to a simpler time that was more carefree!

Comfortable Escape

The house is a comfortable and cozy escape to the quiet and calm countryside of Chase County. Despite being near the BNSF line - the trains don’t honk or ring bells, so they’re relatively quiet and at night definitely helped me sleep. I look forward coming back sometime soon!

Cute but train noise

Very cute property, but railroad tracks right behind the house. A train was going by about every 20mins all night long. Could've sleep. Ear plugs would probably help.

A peaceful place

It was only 20 minutes from tallgrass praire national preserve and we loved the area. The house has a lot of charm with an essence from another time but with modern amenities. We would stay here again.

Wonderful place to relax. Very nice property manager. Took in historical tours in nearby towns that were very interesting and great views. Sunset over the hills beautiful!

Beautiful place

Really nice house, with historic charm. Everything you need but not cluttered. Host was very responsive and had excellent communication about some minor storm damage. Trains run right behind house, but sound is muffled by stone walls and did not bother me at all. Well situated for touring Flint Hills.

Fascinating historical property

I loved my stay at the Frontier Store House. The visible history of the structure (those timbers!) combined with the modern comforts were a perfect mix of past and present for me. Very clean and had everything I needed. I even loved the trains. Will stay here again!

freight trains

The house was very nicely decorated and super clean. The freight trains woke everyone up at least 10 times during the night. House is super close to tracks. It was very close to Pioneer Bluffs venue which was a plus for a wedding. The stairs are steep and need an additional hand rail at the top.

A Look Back

We enjoyed our stay in the property very much. It’s a mix of old and new. The host was amazing to work with! We were in the area for a wedding. I enjoyed the fact that there was no tv! Would very much stay there again if in the area!
