Brand new listing! Welcome to Annie Bay Cottage, a 1920s schoolhouse steps from the ocean on Frolander Bay, 15 minutes south of Powell River. This one-room 480 sq ft cottage is ideal for 1-2 adults. 12 sash windows let in light, ocean and forest views. In summers Annie Bay is an ideal spot for kayaking, swimming and hiking or to enjoy ocean views from the deck or beach. In the winter, cozy up and work on that writing project, listen to the sea lions and watch the storms and marine life.
The space
Annie Bay Cottage is a charming one-room 1920s era schoolhouse located on a rural half acre in Stillwater, 15 minutes south of the city of Powell River, a 5 minute drive to a local general store and about 10 minutes from the Saltery Bay ferry. We are close to the Canoe Route and entries to the Sunshine Coast Trail.
Stillwater is located the unceded traditional shared territories of the Tla'amin and Shishalh Nations. The Shishalh name for Stillwater is qʷoqʷnɛs (Qwoqwness), meaning Little Whale. Dolphins are known to visit!
About the cottage.
This is a quiet retreat in a family oriented community.
The cottage is newly renovated and listed for the first time in July 2025. We have sought to preserve the heritage of the schoolhouse; it leans toward cozy rustic with external wiring, 70s lighting and a rotary telephone (sadly not working). It has all the basic amenities: a full kitchen, full size range, fridge and gas fireplace, shower and hot water on demand, and a large deck and bbq with views over the ocean.
There are hooks for coats and clothing, a linen chest and a large dresser but no built in closets.
The bedroom has a queen size bed, tucked behind a wall for privacy.
The owner-occupied house is adjacent to the cottage (about 20 meters away). We have no pets, and are two working professionals.
Guests have access to the beach via a small ramp, the vegetable garden, a deck attached to the cottage, and parking.
Depending on the time of year the plentiful wildlife includes sea lions (who live on an island nearby), seals, otter, dolphins, whales, many kinds of fish, seabirds, song birds as well as bear and deer.
Amenities and things to do:
Canoe/kayak storage is available on site, or borrow our kayaks if they're available.
The closest store for basic provisions is Lang Bay, a 5 minute drive, open 7 am to 8pm. The City of Powell River has several small and large grocery stores and there are many farm stalls and markets in the summer; qathet also home to excellent artists and an array of summer festivals.
This is an excellent place to launch a kayak, paddle board, fish (with licenses) or hike the local bluffs, forests, and the Sunshine Coast Trail. Our turn off is adjacent to the Sunshine Coast Trail and the Canoe Routes, so an ideal place to start or end your outdoor adventure.
With advanced notice and depending on availability we can pick up/drop off SCT hikers/canoers for a fee.
A bit of history
The cottage has a rich lived history. Annie Bay was the original schoolhouse in Stillwater from 1921 to 1936, when settlers founded a stumping (logging) industry in the area. The small pebble beaches of Frolander Bay and Stillwater made them Sunday and holiday destinations for Vancouver families via the Union Steamship.
Guest access
Guests have access to an ocean-view deck and are welcome to visit the vegetable garden. There is a ramp 20 metres from the cottage with access to the beach. Parking is available on site.
Other things to note
Living close to the ocean and wildlife and on a septic system, we only use biodegradable washing products. Only TP can go down the toilet: absolutely no grease or fats, paper products, floss, etc.
Never leave food waste outside, and please use screens in the drains. We will attend to the composting!
We recommend you book a ferry reservation on the Comox or Saltery Bay ferry as soon as you book your accommodation.
No campfires are permitted during campfire ban periods (usually June - mid September).
