Come stay at The Whitman House a magical gem in the heart of Historic Greenport
Stay in the Historic Whitman House nestled in the quaint village of Greenport
Step back in time while enjoying modern comfort at the Whitman House, a beautifully preserved 1825 home in picturesque Greenport. With its rich history tied to American poet Walt Whitman and his sister Mary, who lived here after her marriage to shipbuilder Ansel Van Nostrand. Greenport, once a bustling whaling and shipbuilding hub, has transformed into a vibrant seaside village filled with charm.
Walt Whitman would visit Greenport for summers, using the home as a peaceful retreat. In his "Letters from Paumanok" he wrote about the area. His writings captured the vitality of Greenport, a busy village centered around whaling and shipbuilding and great place to unwind.
This spacious, light-filled home blends historic character with bright clean modern amenities.

Bars, restaurants, shops, and cafes. The Village has something for everyone, local farm to table food, great sea food and oysters, an abundance of local farm stands. The North Fork is famous for its wineries, great for a day trip or grab a bottle locally.
The carousel, waterfront park and numerous ice cream parlors keep all the kids happy!
The Supermarket and wine shops are steps away. Seasonal activities like indoor year round roller skating and winter ice skating
Beaches are a 5-minute bike ride or 10-minute walk to town beaches, plus stunning private beaches just a short drive away
Much of the North Fork is flat and very suitable for cycling, if you are interested, we have bikes and helmets and we'll be happy to show you a few good spots to visit.

Acerca del anfitrión
Anfitrión: RACHEL A OCONNOR
We are an international family who love to travel. We have been in Greenport for more than 25 years. We are deeply in love with the North Fork and all she has to offer, the beaches, the farms, the ponds, the Osprey! Swimming, cycling, cooking and gardening are a huge part of our lives. The house so open and warm, we have hosted so many families and friends, we are now happy to share it with the world! Sounds idyllic? It is. Come try it out!
Por qué eligió esta propiedad
We discovered the North Fork 25 years ago after staying on Shelter Island. Greenport has so much to offer, with nothing to do and plenty to do.
A vibrant arts community, historic cinema and wonderful library can keep you busy year round. It is as charming in the winter as summer. Autumn is especially great out here with all the farm stands in full glory.
We raised our family here, it is a magical place for children.Easy flat hikes, safe cycling and swimming, lots of fun activities in the Village, many of them free. Fishing, kayaking, all fun and safe on both the Sound and Bay beaches.
The best secret is its proximity to the city, less than a hundred miles, via car, bus, train and airport connections, you can be transported easily to a new world.
Qué distingue a esta propiedad
The house is just magical, at least we think it is.
It has lots of light and great vibes. It is surprisingly large and goes all the way back, opening out to a bright kitchen and garden.
Although very old, it feels bright modern and very airy. She holds up well in the winter and is super cosy.
The sitting room is a rare white wedding cake of a room with pressed tin walls and ceilings.
Old wooden floor boards are so wide and the steep stair case really gives you a sense of time.
There are many original fixtures and fitting that are so sweet, tiny door knobs and old square nails made by a local blacksmith in the late 1800's. Trap doors that go nowhere, hide-y holes upstairs, fun for an adventurous child.
The landing upstairs has a lovely reading bench and library for a chill out zone.
