Shooting Star | Stylish Cabin on the Big Water
Splash down at Shooting Star! This timber-frame retreat blends classic Northwoods cozy with mid-century Nordic style. Shooting Star is a two-bed, two-bath cabin on a tree-lined lot. Settle into some cozy common areas, breathtaking loft spaces and a dream kitchen, all beautifully furnished and all with amazing lake views. There's also a screen porch and second-story balcony, plus a private beach with easy access down a set of stairs—a real rarity on the South Shore!
Your host runs Bark Point Ventures, a vacation rental management & concierge company that specializes in properties on Lake Superior's South Shore. We're nearby and we're always available to assist our guests. Our passion is ensuring guests experience the magic of the South Shore--what we feel is one of the most amazing places in the world.
Shooting Star is on Bark Point, a spit of land that extends several miles out into Lake Superior. The cabin is on the open water side of the point, but there's a boat landing nearby where you can check out the bay behind the point, and you're also just a few minutes from the beautiful estuary at the head of the bay. The cabin has it's own stretch of cobble beach,, but it's also just a few minutes from Herbster Beach, which is one of the biggest and best on the Bayfield Peninsula.
The other South Shore towns, Port Wing to the west and Cornucopia to the east, are both close by, both with their own beaches. Port Wing has an awesome coffee shop that roasts its own beans (we stock them in the cabin) and a great little convenience store with a fish counter. Cornucopia (or ‘Corny' as the locals call it) has an excellent coffee shop, a general store, and a few restaurants and shops. It can be a little more crowded, but it's got a few more amenities, too. Bayfield is close by, too, about 45 minutes’ drive: perfect to check out the attractions over there then return to your South Shore oasis for another Superior sunset. Ashland, where you’ll find more stores and amenities, is just under an hour away. Duluth and Superior are about and hour and a quarter to the west.
Shooting Star sits on an acre lot that’s surrounded by trees on three sides—and on the fourth side is nothing but the open water of Lake Superior, and there’s nothing keeping you from checking it out: the cabin has its own stretch of private cobble beach, with just a short set of stairs down from the grass. The cabin is timber-framed and hand-built, and it’s furnished with an amazing attention to detail.
The common area is anchored by a gorgeous wood-burning fireplace—and, of course, by the views of the lake out the windows. Relax on the sofa, or check out the chaise lounge and lose yourself in the view. There’s also a turntable with an eclectic collection of albums to suit any mood. There’s also a porch with amazing views of the water. The windows are glazed, so it’s a cozy place to watch the water, even when the winds pick up.
The cabin is built on an open-plan design, so you’ll find kitchen and dining spaces adjacent to the common area. The dining area is tucked perfectly into the corner of the space, and it has its own amazing views out to the water. You’ll love the hardwood table and chairs.
The kitchen is a beautiful space, and it’s super functional, too, with high-end cookware and organic spices and everything else you need to make memorable means while you’re on the South Shore. A peninsula countertop separates the kitchen from the dining space, and it’s also got bar seating for two.
The first-floor bath is clean and bright, with a step-in shower and a well-lit vanity. It’s also got a full-size washer and dryer!
The master bedroom is a quiet, calming space with a queen bed and a soothing view out to the trees.
Now let’s head upstairs and check out the loft! There’s an entertainment area with comfy chairs and a big TV, plus a dedicated office space with an inspiring view of the water. There’s also a sun-drenched space for exercise and yoga, complete with a selection of weights and yoga mats. If you need to work instead of work out, this space also has a desk, super comfy chair, and a view of the lake. For an even better look at the water, check out the balcony (it’s an awesome spot for a morning cup of coffee). You might not think it’s all that different, but the second-story view puts you above the waves and lets you see farther out to sea.
The second-story bedroom has a king bed, and it’s just gorgeous, with a funky window and a gray accent wall. It communicates with the rest of the loft, while still feeling removed enough from the action to ensure a good night’s rest. (if you've got more sleepers to accommodate, we've also got a trudge bed in the common area in the loft).
We usually don’t get too excited about bathrooms, but the upstairs bath is pretty amazing: it’s got gorgeous light, a nice treetop view, and a copper soaking tub that the cabin’s first owners brought back from Mexico.
You’ll want to spend some time outside while you’re here, so you’ll be happy to know that you’ve got a few options: besides the beach, there’s a fire pit with Adirondack chairs (the fire pit itself is made from the end of an old propane tank, and it works great!), a deck around the cabin, and lawn space to spread out. There’s also an outdoor shower for when it’s time to come in from the water.
Due to the lack of public transportation and the distance between towns/amenities, a car is pretty much essential. But, on the plus side, traffic is not a concept we have up here!
