Blankenburg (Harz) is a place for cultural explorers, time travellers, mountain lovers and time-out seekers. Thanks to its central location right between Brocken and Bodetal, Blankenburg is ideal for exploring the Harz Mountains on foot or by bike/motorbike.
Blankenburg is a popular holiday destination with its location in the Harz foreland, impressive castle and garden architecture, the historic old town and the stately villas from the Art Nouveau and Wilhelminian periods.
The 100-hectare ensemble of Blankenburg Castle Gardens is one of the largest and oldest in Saxony-Anhalt and an important part of the state's "Garden Dreams" initiative. The parks and gardens of the large and small palace include the terrace garden, the orangery square, the mountain garden with tea house and princess tower, the large palace park with palace pond, the pheasant garden and the Luisenburg. In the medieval old town, the historic town hall, the mountain church of St Bartholomew and Germany's only historic hostel museum are well worth a visit.
Regenstein Castle and Fortress is located on a prominent rocky spur just outside the town. The site is designed as an open-air museum and offers a particularly impressive experience with its architecture carved out of sandstone and the 32 rock rooms and moats that have been preserved to this day. Near the castle, on the Romanesque Road, is the Cistercian monastery of Michaelstein with its monastery herb and vegetable garden.
Hiking enthusiasts will find the popular "Harzer Wandernadel" stamping stations at the legendary Devil's Wall, the mysterious sandstone caves and on the idyllic hiking trails around the town. The R 1 European cycle route and the cycle path network in the northern Harz foreland offer cyclists attractive routes.
With the Blankenburg climbing forest, the Harzkristall glass factory in the Derenburg district and the "Am Thie" biological outdoor pool, Blankenburg also offers a wide range of leisure activities for family holidays in the Harz Mountains.
The surrounding towns such as the World Heritage town of Quedlinburg, Wernigerode with its castle and half-timbered town centre and Halberstadt with its cathedral treasure also offer cultural attractions.
The pre-Christmas ambience at the Great Castle in Blankenburg is highly recommended.
Those interested in Neolithic cult sites will also get their money's worth in Blankenburg. Stonehenge, on the other hand, is a gem.
It's a good thing that the Harz holiday ticket (HATIX) is available. This gives you free bus travel not only to destinations in Blankenburg but also to the towns of Wernigerode, Thale, the World Heritage town of Quedlinburg and Halberstadt, which are 15 kilometres away, as well as the Upper Harz.
