Will try and stay again

I had an amazing time staying at the Hazel Lodge. If your looking to get away from the buzz of the city and explore mountains this is a great place. Cindy has done lots of quality work to the cabin and property to make your stay comfortable. Highly recommend, just don’t tell too many people….

Beautifully build hostel, great Old Growth Cedar across Hwy

The beds in hostel are comfortable, bring your sleeping blankets or bags, as it is not made clear that only a few are available, lots of variety of pillows! ( There are clean sheets in a dresser. ) directions to get there are very difficult (PDF sent night before we left) showed "Lodge" sign on left side of road going West from Kaslo, 31A and directly across is a road to right, which seems easy enough until it is dark and all we remembered was "20 min from Kaslo and 20 from New Denver" which helped us more than directions, as there was no "Lodge" on the sign, but a red curved slash and no words detected in dark and road to cabin not really very visible. What road does have in the light of day, is solar panels up high and some pink flagging on a pole. The out house is a well constructed building, however, what was provided was sawdust, lime is best but wood ash is great second choice. These WILL break down deposits and mostly remove the "outhouse odor". Because it was stated on directions sheet inside of outhouse that "pee is the cause of the smell in the outhouse and to pee, if possible, elsewhere" there is a strong smell of urine on the other side of the cabin (when the sun hits it in the morning, as it is the most comfortable place to go at night). This could easily be neutralized, after boundaries are set and people educated about results of indiscriminate close urination to building. Having stated thoughts on this, the Old growth Cedar Grove across the highway is a wonderland my husband and I enjoyed. The many photo opps include the majestic trees, great roots, formed knots on the ancient trees, moss, beautiful wild flowers and flowing stream. Took an exceptionally beautiful drive to New Denver and had a fantastic lunch! Came back to hostel, easily washed up and went to Kaslo for the throughly enjoyable performance of Michael Franti and Spearhead at festival. Coming back to hostel was much easier even in the rainy dark and fog, as we had first hand knowledge of the Red Slash!! The solar outdoor lights are convenient when driving up, don't forget your flashlights as there is no lights immediately in cabin but once you are in and in kitchen, look on the windowsill, there are solar lamps that work very well! It is well thought out in many aspects. We found the kitchen very easy to use and the water management effective.

Enjoyable and exactly as expected

Our group of 6 friends and family were passing through the are on a motorcycle trip and had the pleasure of enjoying this dry cabin. The location is remote so bring some food/snacks and drinks with you, but it is well setup and offers a unique mountain experience. Communication with Cindy was always quick and accurate which is appreciated. We really enjoyed the night and the small break from civilization. We would stay here again.

Anniversary 2019

we didn’t realize when we rented the property that it would be right on the highway across the street from a very busy Scenic trail. So it was way noisier than we expected. We also didn’t realize we weren’t allowed to have a campfire or we would not have rented the cabin. But overall the cabin was very nice and clean. The cabin had some amazing books and hiking trail maps which led us on an amazing hike up the mountain to see Lyle Lakes. The hike was so amazing and the views were incredible. It is definitely an all day event. We ended our night with the best pizza of all time in Kaslo. It was a great anniversary! I would stay again, We just used our camp chef burner as a fire to sit around in the evening.😊

Great location for a bachelor party.

We truly enjoyed the location of Hazel Hut stay. Day 1, we got 9 fellas up Mt. Brennan in about 8.5 hours return. On Day 2 we floated the first section of the Slocan River under blue sky. It's a great halfway point between Calgary and Vancouver. The hut was stocked with more than enough supplies and equipment to crank out big meals for a group. Bedding was comfortable. Being big into nature, our group loved the quiet location with one car passing by maybe every 20 minutes. The cedar trees and tiny creeks are truly charming, especially if you love the temperate forest feeling of the West Kootenay. It's a good idea to bring collapsible chairs and additional lighting for evening time. Thanks Cindy for a great Stay. Ian Calgary, AB
