Gorgeous Muskoka Waterfront Cottage Tall Pines Prime Swimming 10 Acres

Gorgeous, "eco" cottage directly on the clear water of the Moon River with full sun (Southwest exposure), smooth granite rock, towering white pine trees, and prime swimming for a true, "unplugged" Muskoka vacation.
Summer weekends 2-3 nights min, check-ins on Fri or Sat.
Summer midweek 4-5 nights min, check-ins on Mon or Tues.
The cottage has 400 ft. of riverfrontage and is on 10 acres of mature forest surrounded by extensive wilderness. Enjoy a tranquil vacation with the family. There are no motorboats on the river, so safety and privacy are assured. The granite rock shore provides easy access to step in or jump into the water. There is a canoe, 3 kayaks and a SUP available. Hikers, runners, and cyclists will enjoy many forest trails and laneways. There is a flagstone deck with a fire pit and a granite picnic table. Books and games for all ages. Propane BBQ.

Main bedroom - queen bed and balcony.
2nd bedroom - double bed with option to make up a single bed for a child.
3rd bedroom is a loft bedroom with a queen bed and a twin bed - the loft is accessed by a Japanese ladder.
Scenic views, large windows with screens throughout.

This "eco" cabin is fully wired and is "off the grid" using solar system energy. The cottage is wired with 12 volts and has a 110 outlet too.
The cottage is on 400 feet of waterfront and is accessed by a steep path and stairs from the cottage.
All guests are required to follow local regulations regarding fire bans, water safety and noise. A guideline will be provided for you.

We had a great time at the cottage as a family. We loved how quiet & private the location was. The directions to the cottage were also extremely helpful. There was wifi which was obviously a bit spotty, but it was nice to disconnect & have the kids off their devices for the week anyway. The child size kayaks were a huge plus. There were also tons of frogs, toads, snakes & salamanders for the kids to catch & release. The trampoline was also a highlight for the kids. Honestly, we were never board here, even on the rainy days. We highly recommend walking the trail to the waterfall! We completed this hike all the way down to the waterfall in crocs & Birkenstocks so it’s easily done! The only point I will say is that I feel like there should be a photo of the descent to the dock on the river. It was difficult to help my mom walk down as some of the rocks buckle a bit as you descend and there’s nothing to hold onto. On the way up it was steep for her so she only made it down to the river twice throughout the week. (For context- She has neuropathy due to previous chemotherapy treatments). However, the patio right off to the side of the cottage was perfect for her to sit as well as the balcony off of the bedroom so she could still take in the views of the river & also feel included. All in all, we had a great time & we all hope to return next summer! It’s truly a hidden gem.

Beautiful waterfront, very comfortable beds, and well equipped cottage with all cooking essentials, games, books, watercraft and more. Bathroom situation was a bit more rustic than anticipated when we looked at the listing, and the hot water seemed to be hit or miss when used.

2024 cottage vacation

Loved the access to the water and the use of kayak and canoe. A bit too rustic for the Gen-Alpha group but they learned some board-games. Great down-time.

Hidden gem

The location is private and scenic, the water is beautiful and the cottage is comfortable. You can tell someone has put in a lot of blood sweat and tears to make this spot the best it can be. Would come back in a heartbeat!

True Nature experience

Cute cottage immersed in the woods, with your personal lake and a very relaxing view. The children really enjoyed being in the lake, the trampoline and chasing frogs. Our enemies were the mosquitoes OMG! overall we really enjoyed our time there. Thank you Yolanda for all your help!

beautiful place, adventure awaits

We had a wonderful time with our family (kids aged 3, 5 and 7). Nothing was lacking at all. And the scenery and swimmable water was so magical. Just close enough to town that you can enjoy the quaint Muskoka vibes of Bala and daily donut runs. But far enough off the grid that you really feel as though you are having a unique vacation and doing something special. If you are open to new experiences, and not just a standard cottage rental, give this place a go.

Everything, as promised, and more!

Beautiful location! Peaceful and quiet. Just what we were looking for! Lots for the kids to do (tree house, trampoline, and swings), and all within eyesight of the parents. The whole family can take the steps down to the river to enjoy the view. And, everything is within reach, just where you thought you'd find it. Well equipped and welcoming, this cottage is everything you'd hope for in your Muskoka retreat. Thank you to our hosts for sharing Over the Moon with us!

It sounds as though they intended to book a different cottage than ours since we do not have a hot tub or AC and they are not in our listing. Our cleaners leave three garbage bins lined with bags when they come and there are plenty of extra bags in a kitchen drawer. This group broke two Muskoka chairs during their stay over one weekend.

Live off the grid with some creature comforts - Glamping in Muskoka

Yolanda and Carlos were terrific hosts - always accessible. The Moon river had a strong current and there’s a small waterfall about a 100 metres on the right - so watch out while using kayaks and going too far. Use the property as the boundary. Internet is good. Good LED lighting. No TV. Bring a back up storage battery and a projector if the kids want a movie night. That’s what we did. Kitchen is well equipped. No microwave (because of the power limit). BBQ is in good condition. Don’t use the Brush. Use an onion dipped in olive oil to clean and season the grill. Hope you enjoy your trip as we did. Great off grid location, but for experienced cottagers

The property is located in a beautiful area, but you need to be quite careful when driving up to it - low cars would absolutely NOT be able to safely arrive. The deep woods means lots of mosquitos in July, so hiking wasn’t possible for us. The current was strong so swimming and canoeing were also a no. But, the fire pits outside and general view were spectacular. The sun room was great for being outdoors sans insects, but the whole group got eaten alive anyways and we didn’t use the outhouse as a result. We had no problems with electricity, but didn’t have water by the last night of the trip and that was incredibly challenging and gross. While the cottage itself was beautiful, the absence of fans was incredibly difficult in the humidity - many of us didn’t sleep very well as a result. Expectedly, there were mice but we remained diligent about keeping things clean and stored properly. This is a good place to be in nature and unplug with virtually no one around. The kitchen is very well stocked for all of your needs and the barbecue was great. While I would recommend a stay for experienced cottagers, the glamour of the photos does not indicate how physically comfortable you’d be.

We are glad that you found our property beautiful but some of your comments are unfounded and a result of your irresponsible use of our chalet. Water: Our cleaners, the reputable Busy Lizzy Cleaning company in Muskoka, arrived to clean our chalet after you left and found that YOU LEFT THE WATER TAP IN THE BIDET OPEN AND RUNNING!! That is why you ran out of water when you were there, you emptied the water tank and it was unable to fill up again. This could have resulted in damage to our property had the cleaners not arrived in time to turn the tap off. We left our cottage the day you arrived and there were NO MICE then. The cleaners said they found no trace of mice either. So this comment feels completely odd. ANY car can get to our cottage safely. We have a "low" car ourselves. No one has ever had a problem getting into our place with any type of vehicle. Frankly, we don't understand why you did not reach out to us about the water situation, or other concerns, while you were at the cottage. We trust guests to inform us of issues regarding something as important as that. As it turns out, you were the one that created the problem!

Relaxing stay with family

Had a great 4 nights here with family. Property is incredibly peaceful and set in stunning woodland. Really felt like getting away from urban life. The cottage is very rustic, somewhat basic inside but clean and functional. The ladder to the attic needs to be approached with care. The views from the living area out into the woods and river are spectacular. Sunroom was a beautiful space. Toilet is an out door hole in the ground, 30m from the property, but done well and clean. You are discouraged from using the internal compost toilet. We saw no trace of mice. There is a trampoline,swing and treehouse which our kids 3 and 6 loved and played on all week. Mosquitos are ever present but not a massive issue with repellant, we sat out most evenings. Main disappointment is the river is relatively fast flowing and there is a rapids about 100m downstream. Swimming is therefore not possible unless you are confident, and certainly not for kids. We messed around in the canoe but this did limit options. The rapids are themselves beautiful, and easily reached from a path through the grounds. The entire deck area flooded with around a foot of water overnight one night, which there was no warning of, but had cleared by lunchtime. Fortunately nothing washed away. Overall loved it, but next time would look for somewhere with safer swimming. Despite this our kids were never bored. Would fully recommend for anyone who this isn’t a concern for, who wants to get off the grid.

My family and I had a wonderful time the river was amazing for swimming, close to town, made use of the life jackets, canoes, and kayaks that were provided, great fishing, overall a great week getaway thank you to the hosts, would recommend to anyone !!

Beautiful and Serene Getaway

We had a wonderful time at Over the Moon cottage. The water was calm during our stay and so clear you could see the bottom, excellent for swimming. The setting could not be more peaceful and serene. The children (ages 7 and 9) loved playing on the rocks along the shoreline. Yolanda and Carlos were fantastic hosts, and very easy to communicate with. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely love to come back!

Over the Moon, Bala

The cottage was comfortable, however cleanliness was not acceptable. The property owner quickly contacted the cleaners who were unable to come and clean, she offered to drive two hours to come clean, my husband and I did the cleaning, the owner said she would reimbursement the cleaning fee During our week the river flooded the dock daily and was very fast moving, we couldn’t enjoy swimming as it was to dangerous, this is completely out of the owners control, however it should be noted We took living off the grid as a challenge, we had absolutely no problem with lighting, hot water or charging devices and our week wasn’t particularly sunny Mike and Michelle July 2021

Very nice property with many different area to enjoy the great outdoors.

Everything worked well and the owners were responsive. Water access was restricted (dock was under water) due to unusually high water levels. The current was too strong for swimming.

Nature, art, love

This cottage was very unique, artistic, rustic, in the heart of the woods with waterfront, quiet and simply perfect for someone who is seeking comfort but wants to be closest possible to the nature! We loved every single minute of our stay here. Would definitely go back! Owners were very responsive, the fridge faced an issue and within a few hours the owner drove all the way from Toronto to come fix it. Would strongly recommend this cottage.

Very beautiful location, great host

We had a great time! The cottage is beautifully decorated, the river is stunning and the host was very responsive and helpful. The property is close enough to town to easily get what you need but also felt private and peaceful.

A special place

Our second time renting here, and even more lovely. This is a unique spot for people who appreciate true natural beauty and are up for something different. Comfortable, clean, and full of things to do, like canoe, swim, read in the hammock, Firepit, trampoline, tree house. You won’t miss your screens or wifi. My kids didn’t ask once for a screen. We recommend to families with kids older than 5, and not too too senior, simply due to the stairs. It is a great spot, and we expect to return again.
