Bass Lake has been a popular vacation destination for nearly 100 years. Construction of a hydroelectric dam at the southern end of Crane Valley across the North Fork of Willow Creek began in 1899. The lake reached its current level in 1909 with the completion of the current earth-filed dam. It is currently operated by Pacific Gas and Electric Company. At an elevation of 3,500 feet, Bass Lake gets some winter snow with mild spring and fall temperatures. Area activities include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, sightseeing, and visits to Yosemite National Park. In addition to recreation, the water is used to generate electricity and to irrigate the San Juaquin Valley's rich farmland. The lake normally fills in late spring and is lowered in the fall for flood control purposes which makes room for the run-off from winter rains and the following spring snow-melt.
Bass Lake has been the backdrop for many TV commercials and motion pictures including the Academy Award winning "Leave her to Heaven" (1945), "The Deerslayer" (1957), "The Great Outdoors" (1988), "Meatballs 4" (1992), and most recently, "Mouse Hunt" (1997).
