Shelduck Cottage is a wonderful holiday cottage nestled on the shore of Loch Riddon, a spectacular sea loch, near Colintraive, Argyll. The property was built in 2011 in one of the most the scenic locations in Cowal.

Interior
Bright, spacious and light Shellduck Cottage has been warmly decorated to create a welcoming home from home. The ground floor features a large living space, and an inviting sunroom with double doors leading onto a deck area with views over the loch – perfect for an alfresco breakfast or an evening drink to soak up the setting. The living areas all enjoy stunning window views finished with and a cosy wood burning fire and central heating. Perfect for all seasons.

There’s a well-equipped kitchen and dining area enjoy views and leads to a utility room, shower room and another outside door, serviced by a ramp for wheelchairs.

All three bedrooms have their own ensuite bathroom with bath tub. There are two twin bedrooms downstairs, one can be converted to a double. The first floor has a double room that boasts stunning views down the loch and beyond, featuring a spacious pamper bathroom. There is a large landing with a sofa bed or it can be a quiet space for reading or enjoying the loch views.

Explore
The manicured garden is filled with roses and flowers in spring and summer, this area is fenced, so is safe for children to play in.

Fishing is available on the owners private stretch of river. Rods are available if required. Your views are simply stunning. The owners are happy to assist and advise on the many outdoor activities surrounding this spectacular region.

Lovely view of the Loch and surrounding hills. Cottage was very warm and a bonus of a log burner, kitchen well equipped and dog friendly. Beds very comfortable Lounge seating could do with updating.

Room to chill

Great location for exploring the area and a lovely peaceful spot with owners nearby if needed. We were lucky with sunny weather all week.

Fantastic cottage

Our stay in Shelduck was tranquil and so relaxing. Amazing location. The hosts couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating. We will definitely return. Most comfortable beds too.

A tranquil break

The cottage is in an excellent location, just across the road from the sea loch. Our host Andrew welcomed us personally and made us feel like his guest, help and advice available if needed. The location provided a base to explore the local area and a tranquil place to retreat to at night. Dunoon down the road provided great food and a relaxing promenade. All in all we had a great family week away.

A comfortable cottage in beautiful countryside.

Shelduck is ideal for a large family or for two families wanting a lovely place to stay with lots of room. Facilities are good. The owner lives nearby and is very helpful. There is a garden which, unfortunately, is not secure for an inquisitive dog.

Lovely week at Shellduck

Spent a very enjoyable August week at Shellduck. We were a three-generation family group of six people, and the cottage could have ben designed for us: a comfortable double or twin room for each generation. There is also a sofa bed, so you could get 7 or 8 in there if you could stand each other! The comfortable kitchen table and the L-shaped sitting room allowed many family conversations, and we threw a party with 17 guests one afternoon no problem: we took advantage of the honesty-box venison steaks and the barbecue for this, too. Shellduck is not your IKEA-furnished, sterile Air B&B: It has character, and the furniture is a mixture of heirlooms and new that we all found very comfortable. Please don't change anything! The first floor has lovely views over the loch, and the place is quiet at night, with only the occasional car passing by. We genuinely hope to book Shellduck again!

Argyle/ Cowal peninsula

The Shelduck cottage is a excellent base for exploring this scenic part of Scotland. Easy access to the Ferries to Bute/ Tarbert and Dunoon ..Andrew , our host was very helpful and made our stay memorable.We used a wheelchair and his concrete ramp was ideal for entering and leaving this spacious property. Would recommend this quiet location overlooking loch Riddon.

Bygone days

Beautifully kept gardens and a well equipped kitchen with very friendly owners and clean bathroom utilities. However, the cottage is in need of some TLC and investment in new sitting room furniture is a must. The cottage was very dusty and full of spiders and webs throughout, the curtains either had tears or were extremely thick with dust. The veranda outside suffers with rotten wood with several of the balustrades either missing or tied up with nylon. The site is shared with another cottage so is not completely enclosed ( although is from the main road - a single track road in front of the cottage). The location is lovely and with a good clean and a few repairs the cottage could be restored to the former beauty it once obviously was.

A lovely spot to explore Argyll or sit back and relax!

This property is in a perfect location for exploring Argyll, an hour from Loch lomond, a short drive from Dunoon and the botanical gardens. There are also some beautiful beaches nearby at Kilbride Bay (even in the rain). The house itself is spacious and well kept with all the amenities you could need. It's well furnished and serviced. The hosts next door are very helpful and welcoming, and although we didn't use, the open wood stock and honesty style freezer are great touches. My only suggestion for an improvement would be a comfier mattress in the master bedroom, but it certainly wouldn't stop us returning again for a lovely visit!

We had a wonderful break

This is a really comfortable cottage in a lovely peaceful spot. There were lots of places within a short drive to keep us happy, but we also enjoyed getting the little ferry to Bute and going further afield up to Inverary, then down to Tarbert and getting the ferry back from there. There's a little Marina opposite which is a nice place for a drink and a snack. Our favourite spot in the cottage was the sun room, looking out at the lovely garden and watching the many variety of birds. We had a bit of difficulty accessing WiFi, but that didn't bother us much. The owners were very helpful and welcoming.

Picturesque spot, to chill and relax.

Thoroughly enjoyed our week at Shelduck cottage. The cottage is located in a picturesque spot at the head of loch Riddon. The house was clean with adequate facilities ,a well equiped kitchen , comfy beds ,with the woodburning fire making the evenings nice and cosy , with the views from the windows looking onto the loch, delightful, The decked terrace lends itself to barbecues and quiet evening drinks-- this house has a lovely ambience. Its a convenient base to explore the Kyles of Bute ,"the secret coast", and most places on the west coast. Andrew and Sheila, were always accomodating when needed.

Good, but could be Excellent.

Lovely looking cottage, nice enclosed garden and lots of room. Ideal, quiet location. Helpful host. Slight downside in that the three armchairs are VERY old, stained and definitely need replacing or should have throws to cover them. The iron ( which leaks badly ) and hairdryer haven't been PAT tested for two years, which needs addressing as both are ( again ) old items showing their age. In summary, a good cottage which could be excellent if given some TLC to spruce it up.

Lovely cottage

Lovely cottage with beautiful views.A bit isolated for us need to read the overview more.Not near ammenities like local shops,petrol station and pubs and restaurants.T.V with freesat and apps.Plenty of space for 5 adults plenty of hot water.Use of washing machine ,but dryer in shed not working.Wood burner for chilly nights even in june when its rainning.Would reccommend if you like hiking and isolation.The peace and quiet was lovely ,but not the midges.

Lovely spot with downsides.

A great house in a great place. Very warm and it had everything we needed for a family holiday. On arrival, my elderly mother opened the fridge door and it fell off and hit her on the head. The owner sourced a replacement fridge, but I had to help him shift it, and although he apologised, he showed no empathy or concern for my mum. Two of the downstairs toilets were dodgy too. The cisterns wouldn't fill without removing the lid and fiddling with the strange mechanism. This situation created stress in my mother and lessened her enjoyment of the holiday. The owner got a plumber out but the issue was not resolved. The beds. The beds were bloody awful. My wife and I had the upstairs bedroom and the bed was the worst. We were both rolling into the middle and it felt as though the mattress was full of coathangers. But, all that being said, we had a good time. There were lots of positives, the kitchen had everything and a decent cooker, the wood burner was first class, a decent TV, not that we watched it much and as I said earlier, it's in a beautiful place.

A lovely spacious cottage near the loch. A road at the front which was not busy . There are 3 red squirrels near by, but only saw one fleetingly. Plenty of garden birds. A quiet and peaceful situation.

This is a perfect location for a peaceful holiday we booked both cottages and had a wonderful week, the view was stunning, the owners a friendly couple, remember go supermarket shopping before arrival as its around 16 miles to nearest and 6 to the local shop xxx

Shelduck Cottage is perfectly situated as a base to explore the Cowal Peninsula, and nearby Bute. We had a fantastic week there and were very comfortable. We recommend it.

A Perfect break

What a fabulous week. The house is spacious, with lovely views and well equipped. It’s also very comfortable. We had predominantly good weather but on the one wet day we were quite happy to relax in the house. Andrew and Sheila were really welcoming and shared fantastic information about local wildlife.

Room with a view

Shelduck cottage is situated at the end of the loch with lovely views. It has a large enclosed garden. The cottage was comfortable and we enjoyed having the log burner on in the evenings. The kitchen was basically equipped with one set of cutlery, one bowl, one plate etc per person ( covid regulations) . The frying pan was really no use at all and one of the saucepan lids was broken and quite dangerous. We also had to take our own towels which we have never had to do in other self catering establishments. The nearest shop is in Tighnabruaich which is a 15 minute drive away.

Dear Sharon I have just been sent a copy of your review following your stay in Shelduck and am very sorry about the frying pan/saucepan lid. which we are dealing with straightaway. The fact that we have been advised to limit the amount of crockery and cutlery is as frustrating for us as it is for the guests and the same applies to the advice that we have received to ask guests to bring their own towels as we have a large supply of them sitting in our house ready for use in the cottages if the advice changes. I am today writing to the relevant self catering advisory organisation for any update they can give us on these issues. Also as a result of your comments relating to the wi-fi, I have spoken to BT and they have apologised for a recent deterioration in signal for our area owing to what they described as 'technical reasons'. Consequently, I have cancelled my BT account and transferred to 4G from whom I have already received a new router. I am confident that we will now have a far better signal for both our cottages. I hope that you had a good journey home and that when current restrictions in Scotland are lifted and we are able again to equip the cottages as we would like , you will come back again. Beautiful place

The cottage was very large ,with 4 bathrooms the bedrooms were large and comfortable the only downside was the lack of wardrobes in all bedrooms and we found the television very small for the size of the lounge. I know you don't go to watch television but when the weather is not to good and you have small children you need somethig of a decent size to watch . But you can get over that and overall we were very pleased with the cottage and I would recomend it for your holiday as it is in a beautiful area and the cottage had fantastic views from most of the windows and had a nice enclosed garden.I just wish it had been in better times and not throughout the restrictions with covid 19.

Post new year relaxation

We stayed here for a few days from the 2nd to the 5th January 2020. The cottage was lovely, very clean & welcoming. It had everything we could have wanred including cot & high chair for our 6 month old granddaughter & unlimited logs for the fabulous log fire. The surrounding area is stunning with plenty walks for our dogs. Andrew & Sheila were perfect hosts who gave us our pivicy but were also on hand if needed! Thanks you both it was the perfect break to re-charge before getting back to work! We would love to return & hopefully one day we will. Susan Craig & family! X🤞

Peaceful Rural Getaway

We had a short stay here recently - but the tranquility and peace of the cottage made it a very refreshing break! The views of the top of the Loch ( especially from upstairs) are gorgeous and it is fantastic to stop and listen to the silence, only broken by the occasional Oystercatcher. At night you can hear owls calling to each other and see the stars. It's not totally remote, but in fact is situated on the roadside in a great position where you can head off in different directions to explore different parts of Argyll. The cottage is warm and comfortable - it has enough things that you need for a rural get-away. The water pressure is superb so you can have a wonderful shower after your walk! It was very clean and the wood-burning stove had been made up in readiness for a cosy night in, with plenty of logs to top-up with. There are various excellent establishments within driving distance and of course amazing views everywhere. There is so much to do in the area so if you are visiting to explore and have an adventure, make sure you plan ahead. Andrew Barker is very friendly and helpful and excellent at communicating, so the check-in/out was very smooth and he is on hand for any queries. We are hoping to return when we can!
