Wonderful time in Playa Grande.
The house was just what we needed. It comfortable with all the amenities. Coffee in the morning was especially nice with howler monkeys hooting and yelling and tons of birds of every sort calling loudly. The pool was really nice. 5 ft dept throughout and lighting for evening swims.
Playa Grande was very tranquil and we were so glad we were there over the hustle of Tamarindo.
We would definitely come back.
A very special place to call home for a time!
We really loved our stay at Casa La Paloma! The beds were comfortable, towels plentiful, and the kitchen had all the items we needed. The real charm was in the very private and large lot and pool. Orange, starfruit and palm trees, hibiscus and other trailing flower vines, iguanas and geckos roaming... all made for a delightful experience. The private pool was hours of fun. We swam every evening under the moon and stars while listening to the howler monkeys nearby. We made lots of noise without worrying about bothering anyone. The beach was beautiful and the surf gentle enough for our kids to learn to body board (2 body boards and 1 surf board were provided by Casa La Paloma). Gorgeous shells were found all over the beach, which delighted our kids. We also found large tide pools at the north and south end of Playa Grande beach. The quality of the restaurants in Playa Grande was also a delight and surprise. We had especially good meals at El Huerto, RipJack Inn and Cafe Mar Azul. We started out with a lot of questions for and help from the property manager (thanks Shawna!), but eventually rented a car and found that we were happier navigating on our own, rather than taking taxis or booking guided tours. We drove ourselves to the Hacienda Guachipelin and did their One Day Nature Pass. It was probably the highlight of the trip! We can't really say enough good things about the whole experience of Costa Rica. The only reason for 4 stars for Casa La Paloma is that things are a bit worn in places (didn't bother us and reflected in cost) and we did not receive housekeeping during our 7 day stay. This also did not bother us except that we had anticipated service at least once or twice based on what we read on VRBO. It may have had to do with the fact that we were there over a national holiday (Holy Week). I have no doubt that, had we bothered to ask, housekeeping would have occured. Just something to clarify if it's important to you. Overall, a delightful stay! Thanks so much!
La Paloma is, and was, everything we were looking for in our vacation home. Separate from the crowds and bustle but close enough for supplies, travel, beaches, and restaurants. Travelling, vacationing, and Living in Costa Rica is about returning to a simpler lifestyle and this casita is perfect for that. Walk to the beach. Relax by the pool. Sunbathe on the deck, or cool off in the hammock. Sleep under the fan, or with the A/C, your choice. Sure, the kitchen supplies and pans are a bit worn, but life is not about perfection, it’s about doing everything you can with what you have. Here, you can do it all, or nothing at all. Your choice.
Thank you for your great review. We are so happy that our house suited you so well. Pura Vida!
Great location, comfortable house, nice private pool
We stayed 12 days and were really happy with everything. We didn’t have a car but the gorgeous beach is a short walk away, and there are really good restaurants and a small store very close by. We also saw plenty of wildlife on our many short walks around the area or on the property. It’s a short walk to where you can get a boat taxi to Tamarindo for $1-3 where there are a ton more restaurants and shops, but we only went there once because we were so happy with the Playa Grande area. It’s safe, quiet, and really pretty.
The WiFi worked well, there is a DVD player and even cable or satellite TV (not sure which it was). The kitchen is very functional and we had anything we needed to prepare meals. There are plenty of towels and linens.
We were pleasantly surprised by how nice the pool was. It is nicer in person than in the online pictures. Also, this is maybe a weird thing to say, but the bathroom is nice and I don’t think there were pictures of it online. It’s larger than most and had pretty tile work and a walk-in shower.
Even though the AC is only in the bedrooms, the house stayed cool despite 90 degree Fahrenheit weather. The covered patio is also great and stays surprisingly comfortable. There are ceiling fans in all the rooms and the patio.
The owner and property manager are helpful and easy to deal with. Prior to our stay, the owner even followed up to an email I sent by calling me, which I’ve never had a property owner do before and I thought was very kind. During our stay the property manager texted me to follow up with us about something, and she also arranged a tour for us and airport transportation.
Housekeeping came by three times during our stay and the pool was cleaned several times. Someone even came by and cleaned up the yard/landscaping a couple times. The property seemed really well maintained.
The only negative things (which are shown in the online pictures but just something to consider if these things are important to you) are that the living room isn’t the most comfortable since the couches are more like benches with pads on them, and the oven is an older smaller model so it takes a little longer to make meals. Not a big deal obviously!
We would definitely stay here again. We really enjoyed the area and the house was perfect for us.
Nothing fancy and needs upgrades and maintenance. Paint chipping in bedrooms. There was a broken coffee carafe so we poured coffee into a 2-Cup glass. Frig. does not stay shut all the way so we wedged a plastic spoon in there to keep it shut. Only one bike was available to use and we were told there were two. Boogie boards and foam long board there pretty beat up: bring all your own boards/ fins and you will be fine. Pool was great to have because of the 90 degree heat except it never got cleaned in our 10 stay except for the day before we left. I feel like the grounds people could have come to water the property at least one time. The grounds are private and a large lot. Keep in mind there is only air conditioning only in bedrooms so when you are in living, dining and kitchen room there is only fans. We stayed for 9 nights with a car to get to other beaches. Cleaning gals came 2 times in our 10 day stay and that was plenty. We appreciated there help and conversation. There is a couple other places in Grande to stay that are a little more maintained but it was nice to have private pool.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, Jeanne. We're working with our onsite property manager & concierge to look into your few areas for improvement. We appreciate you choosing Casa La Paloma as your vacation accommodations and hope we can host you again to make your experience exceptional!
Peaceful and Cozy
We had the pleasure of staying at Casa Paloma while our friends and family were experiencing frigid temperatures back in NYC. This home was more than spacious for this family of three. Having AC in the bedrooms was very helpful considering the temperatures were 90 degrees during our stay in Costa Rica. Having access to our own private pool also helped when the temperatures were high.
The beach is completely within walking distance and on our walk to the beach one day we encountered a family of howler monkeys up in the trees. Playa Grande is very popular with surfers and those taking surf lessons. Keep in mind there is NO shade on the beach so you must be sure to protect yourself with sunblock because the weather was extremely hot. We found one shady area during our stay and that provided much relief from the sun's rays. This shady area can only accommodate six people comfortably so try and stake your claim quickly. We only got it during one of our visits to the beach.
Many animals visited our property including an anteater, many different types of birds, one howler monkey, and an appearance and disappearance of a dead bat.
This home is an isolated community but there is a mini market (Wil-Mart) and a few restaurants within walking distance so if you are looking for a bustling town you are going to need a vehicle. We opted for some private tours for three days of our stay and did not need to have access to a car. Our Tour Guide provided the transportation we needed and was extremely knowledgeable of Costa Rica. The company is Costa Rica Private Tours and Freddy Montero was awesome.
