Welcome to Scuttlebutt Nautical Cottage!
Just one block from Taylor Creek and Beaufort’s scenic waterfront—and only a 10–15 minute stroll to the charming historic downtown—this rustic retreat offers both comfort and convenience. You’ll have easy access to the beauty of North Carolina's Crystal Coast, all while enjoying a cozy space filled with artwork and books from the original Scuttlebutt, a beloved bookstore and gift shop that was a Beaufort institution for over 30 years.
The cottage feels like Beaufort's old seafaring past, with its exposed beams, high ceilings, and original pine hardwood floors. It's warm and cozy, with a lived-in feel that makes you want to kick off your shoes and relax in peace.
Outside, you've got the best of both worlds. The expansive back deck comes with an electric BBQ and plenty of space for meals or just hanging out, while the front porch offers a more classic coastal experience with its swing and two rocking chairs, perfect for morning coffee or evening conversations.
Everything feels walkable and accessible from the cottage. Head right on Front Street toward downtown Beaufort and you'll pass some of the area's most gorgeous historic homes while enjoying beautiful views of Carrot Island, where wild horses roam free.
The Scuttlebutt Spirit
For 30 years, my parents Doreen and Jim owned and operated Scuttlebutt Nautical Books & Bounty, a beloved bookstore and gift shop in the heart of downtown Beaufort. When the business closed in 2022, we decided to carry on the Scuttlebutt spirit in our little home, and throughout the cottage, you'll find some of the same books, artwork, and nautical gifts that made the original Scuttlebutt so special.
Historical Note
The original building (now the family room with original wood burning stove) was built in Morehead City in 1910. Subsequently, it was moved to its present location in Beaufort and two additions were constructed: the present day eat-in kitchen and the middle structure with dinning room, baths and two bedrooms. Architecturally, you will notice the style differences between the family room and kitchen with vaulted ceilings, and the newer middle structure.
