Stay in an authentic 1823 post-and-beam framed Federal style rural farmhouse.

Relax and reflect in an 1823 farmhouse with an 1880s kitchen addition. Located on a quiet paved road in the township of Kiantone, New York, in Chautauqua County, the states' westernmost county, this is a place where history and nature can be studied and enjoyed. Rooms are restored to their best original look and furnished with antique reproductions suitable to the houses' time. The kitchen is equipped with modern appliances for those who like to cook and bake on their own. Cups, mugs, plates, silverware, etc., are provided. Rooms are heated by clean natural gas heaters, augmented by a Vermont Castings Resolute Acclaim fireviewing woodstove which guests may use if desired. A quantity of seasoned firewood is kept in the attached woodshed for this use. A modest library of interesting and classical books is on hand for your quiet enjoyment. We have 23 acres of land for your hiking and exercising needs. No, the house is not haunted, so far as we know!

Peaceful Retreat for History Lovers
I initially booked this stay for just the solar eclipse. What I ended up with was a relaxing vacation. Not only was the property exactly like the listing, but Lyle and Nancy were the greatest hosts anyone could've asked for. They gave us awesome recommendations for places to eat and things to do. Before I knew it our weekend was filled with more activities than I had expected or anticipated. The property itself is gorgeous. They lovingly restored the beautiful historic farmhouse. I'd wake up in the morning and watch the bluebirds nesting outside the bedroom window. Lyle and Nancy also welcomed us to explore their 22 acre property. There are plenty of books to read, and Nancy has left us some games... we "unplugged" for the weekend and were able to get a much needed recharge. They both are members of a local historic society, so don't forget to ask them about the area!

I'm a native of Chautauqua County, born right in Jamestown, NY, a tenth generation New Yorker and a descendant of Dutch settlers of the Hudson Valley (1661). Retired in 2014, a 25 year employee of the NYS Department of Corrections, and 16 years with the Jamestown Area Regional Transit System prior. My wife Nancy is also from Jamestown and is a retired school business administrator. We enjoy traveling and visiting historic places and living history museums. I enjoy working on and riding vintage motorcycles, restoring early homes, and water-powered mills. I'm new at hosting.

We live in a farming and residential area of our county on a (mostly) quiet paved road. Our location on Spencer Road happens to be a route commonly used by the Amish who frequently travel between one "community" in nearby Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania, and another in Conewango, in nearby Cattaraugus County, NY, so their buggies passing by are a familiar sight. You can hear them coming by the clattering of the steel buggy wheels and the horses hooves on the pavement. We cultivate good neighbors and they reciprocate by keeping eyes on our houses and by being helpful during emergencies. We don't hunt, but do allow some of our most trusted friends to do so. We are only about 5 minutes from Jamestown which has several good restaurants which we can suggest. We also have two local theaters which provide varied venues during season. Many other attractions are nearby, including the new National Comedy Center. I can furnish a list of local attractions on request.

The Orchard Cottage farmhouse is unique because it has remained in the same farming family since 1900, and changed hands few times prior to that. Because of this, the exterior of the house has escaped the disastrous muddeling that most early homes suffer. The interior was changed but the damage was reversible. An un-
finished room in the "garret" and the root cellar, clearly shows the early construction details of the house. I believe the house was part of the Underground Railroad, as Jamestown and its immediate area were on one of its' "roads". I discovered a title page of Frederick Douglasses' newspaper "The Abolitionist" between some sheathing boards when I was doing some exterior repairs, which I have saved. In fact, Mr. Douglass held a famous abolitionist rally in nearby Sugar Grove, Pa., prior to the Civil War. An historic marker there mark the occasion.
