We rented this property for our family of 11 over the week of the Fourth of July. My husband and I owned a house on Big Green Lake for 33 years and have rented other properties on the lake. So, we are familiar with the area and other houses on the lake. We though this cottage would work well based on the pictures and the advertised details of 4 bedrooms and ability to sleep 14 – but he pictures and details in the listing were not accurate.
Arriving, we found the outside areas were dirty and not maintained. The deck/patio area was filthy. Every window had spiderwebs/bugs trapped in the screens. Unlike the photos, nearly the entire view of the lake was obstructed by giant, overgrown bushes. The dock was smaller than the dock in the listing photo, had missing boards, and jagged, rusty support poles. There was no ladder for swimmers. Worst of all, there was part of a decomposing animal in the fire-pit next to the kid’s sand pile in front of the house, a rancid bratwurst in the barbecue, and the barbecue grill was covered in some sort of fur – we replaced it.
The disappointment continued inside.
Sheets and towels are not supplied at this property. You must bring your own.
In the kitchen, there is no storage for dry goods, only one fluorescent light, and the pots and pans were ruined by burned on food and scratched off Teflon. The bathroom off of the kitchen was disgusting. The shower and walls were stained. The “privacy” curtain blocking the neighbors from seeing into the shower had black mold, as did the window frame behind it. There were many dead bugs stuck to the ceiling over the sink and the bath mat was moldy, matted and disgusting. It looked like a drowned animal. We replaced it with one of our own.
This is not a 4-bedroom house. There is one-bedroom downstairs and two tiny rooms upstairs. Upstairs, there is a double bed on the landing at the top of the stairs, a double bed and a crib in room one, and a double bed with two singles in room two. The a/c is located in room two. It is loud and there was something constantly rattling inside it. Room two stays ice-cold while room one and the landing were uncomfortably warm no matter how many fans we used. Also, the pull-out couches were so old and uncomfortable that we had to stack both mattresses on the ground to make one useable bed. In the end, sleeping arrangements were so untenable that my husband and I had to rent a hotel room in town.
We would never stay at this property again.
