Adorable 3 Bedroom Highlands Cottage - Highlands Nook

An adorable 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom Highlands cottage with a great location and lovely outdoor space. Follow the path to the covered entryway and enter the upper level of the home. The upper level includes a kitchen and dining area, the master bedroom, full bathroom, and deck access. The master bedroom has a king bed and TV and uses the upstairs bathroom with a step-in shower. The screened in deck offers a space for dining and relaxing, and can be opened on one side to include an open area of the deck. Downstairs, one guest room with 3 twin beds neighbors a second guest room with 2 full beds. The sitting area on the lower level has a TV and sliding glass doors to the outdoor dining area and firepit, surrounded by beautiful lush greenery. This home is in a perfect location for taking advantage of downtown Highlands and enjoying a private setting.

Your reservation includes a damage protection plan. The damage protection plan is $40, and it covers up to $500 in damages. In lieu of purchasing the damage protection plan, guests have the option to choose a refundable security deposit. If you would like to pay a refundable security deposit, please contact us. The security deposit is $500 and will be administered subject to the NC Tenant Security Deposit Act.

Lots to like, lots to not like
Pros: Location (close to town and just off Franklin Road), wonderful outdoor living room with a view, sound of rushing brook right below property. Decently stocked kitchen dishes and glassware. Did not have time to use firepit which looked inviting. Cons: Downstairs was so musty smelling that the smell stuck in your throat, white blanket on bed had “stuff” all over it - like it had been thrown on the floor and not washed or shaken off before returning to bed. One downstairs bedroom had a door that was blocked by furniture and could not be closed, so it was wide open to sitting room at all times. But the worst was the swarm of insects that appeared in the downstairs bathroom in the middle of the night. There were itty bitty crawling insects (too many to kill) and flying insects that looked suspiciously like termites tho I have no reference for this, and not a can of insect spray anywhere in the house. We had four women and were down to one bathroom. Not a great scene!! The oldest member of our group felt the railings on the steep stairwell to the bottom floor bedrooms were not adequate and an accident waiting to happen. Although there was much to like, would not book this property again.

Great Cabin!
My family and I spent four nights in Highlands Nook and had a great overall experience. The view was beautiful, there was plenty of outdoor seating areas, the AC worked super well, and the house was well decorated and cozy. The house was also within close proximity to downtown Highlands which is a major plus. The whole house gave off an authentic well kept up cabin feel. As far as cons might go the showers and the bathroom sinks/ vanity area leave much to be desired. The stairs are also quite narrow and steep. Which is something to keep in mind for those traveling with children and/ or elderly people. It also would have been nice if there was some floodlights outside the sliding glass doors downstairs. It would help tremendously with those who like to grill at night and hangout outside on the porch. Another thing to keep in mind as well is that the two doors leading into the double queen bed bedroom downstairs do not close all the way (and one of the doors lead into the twin bedroom). All in all we had a great time.

Rustic Cabin Vibe
Very nicely decorated with new furniture, however the kitchen and bathroom lack updated essentials…only a very small countertop dishwasher that fits only a few small dishes (not sure the point), no toaster that we found, a very small microwave. Both identical bathrooms had a shower that looked like a hospital room shower from the 50’s with a mat that covered the very moldy floor drain, and zero counter space, only an old sink attached to the wall. We also found 2 leaks during our stay and killed several very large spiders and had to get rid of 2 egg sacs within 2 of the bedrooms. Sloping and creaky wood floors made the fountain seem a bit scary. Master bedroom was very nice and comfortable, with downstairs beds ideal for several children. Almost no grass or property space other than fire pit. No driveway or yard….in fact the only parking is 1 car on the very narrow mountain road right outside the front door. We enjoyed the screened in living area with the dining table. Not ideal for small children because of the stairs, the road, and the steep hill off the back. Overall ok, but not luxurious by any means.
