Perfect month on a peaceful Donegal farmAs a city girl, spending a month here in August was wonderful. We were four adults and two children (some nights we were six adults and two children) and had more than enough space - the house was comfortable and beautifully kept. Mornings and evenings we watched the cows head off to be milked, there were sheep outside my window, and the wide, calm countryside views were simply stunning. Michael and Jennifer were great to work with - the whole process from booking to check-out was seamless. We loved visiting Donegal town and used it as a base for many day trips. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to spend time in the country — whether a month or a shorter stay.

Relaxing and peaceful.

We spent 17 nights at the Hilltown in Ballintra, outside of Donegal Town. It met or exceeded our expectations. Very peaceful, country setting.

Lovely

Absolutely charming house and location. Plenty of places to walk - beach was a favorite for our family. Loads of charm, room to spread out and comfortable beds. Jennifer the house agent is incredibly friendly and great with communication.

Just what we were looking for!

Beautifully restored farmhouse in a perfect rural setting! Private - but just a few minutes drive to restaurants/pubs, the beach, and historic Donegal town. Most strongly recommended!

Family trip to Ireland

Beautiful property located in the country side, very peaceful and relaxing. 15 minutes to town made it handy for groceries and restaurants. Beach near by is a bit of a walk but a quick drive. Lots of great sites to see in the surrounding areas. Was one of our top family vacations. Would highly recommend this property.

Home away from home

Thoroughly enjoyed our time at this charming home in the countryside of Donegal. Quiet with spacious rooms. The hosts were great and all our needs were met. Highly recommend. You will need a car to get to town and other places. Donegal

Beautiful.

We had a wonderful stay. It’s exactly what you think when dreaming of a country Irish cottage. Could have done without all the house spiders though.. but they were friendly and obliging to share their space. Great location to donegal town and Northern Ireland tourist destinations were easy for day trips!Would definitely go back.

Another incredible visit!

Bill and I spent another incredible two weeks at Hilltown. The family connection is so important to us! We enjoyed walking the strands with old and new friends, meeting up for lunch dates with Bill’s cousin, visiting other cousins and friends! Our friends, who traveled with us,thouroghly enjoyed the comforts afforded at Hilltown, the beauty of the country-side and exploring what Donegal has to offer. We are already looking forward to planning another visit back to Ireland!

Hilltown is Heaven!

Our family had the best time in this gorgeous house. The location is off the beaten path, the views are spectacular, the locals couldn't have been more friendly. Hilltown gave us the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the company of all under one cozy roof. We had our walks in the woods, visits by the ocean, trips into Donegal town, Glenveagh National Park, Slieve League, fresh fish in Killybegs, or just sitting on the hill and enjoying the view. Our caretaker Jennifer and host Michael were always just a phone call away. Thank you Hilltown for giving us the happiest vacation our family could ever have imagined.

A perfect place for our family to reunite with my husband during his 2-week leave during his tour of duty in Iraq. The caretakers were helpful and accommodating to our every wish - we were welcomed by a decorated Christmas tree upon our arrival on Christmas Eve. The Hilltown is the perfect place for any holiiday - especially with children, as there is ample space, a large dining room, and plenty of fresh air and scenery to admire. The town has shops aplenty - and the people are all wonderful and helpful. Make sure you go to the Cliffs of Bunglass - highest cliffs in Europe!

We had a grand week this August ('08) with two other couples. The accomodations were charming and comfortable. The caretaker, Geoffrey, was attentive and helpful. We ate in three times, enjoying the Olympics and turf fire. The Hilltown is centrally located for golf: Murvagh (Donegal), Rosses Point (Sligo), Great Northern (Bundoran) and Narin-Port Noo. There are plenty of others, but time only allowed us these four. There are beaches, restaurants, culture and Donegalness! We defintely will repeat. Enjoy, Denis and Louise Duffy

Family stay in Donegal

Beautiful, spacious, comfortable, well-equipped house in a rural location. Our group of 8 had plenty of space & options for sleeping. We were lucky to have great weather during our stay so took full advantage of the outside patio area. The scenery is out of this world. Bedrooms were lovely and comfy, the kitchen and big dining room perfect for a group to cook at home. A short drive into Donegal Town was a small surprise based on the description of the property where it states walking distances to nearby attractions. This should be more accurate but wasn't a big deal. Communication with the property manager was excellent. The morning cow parade past the property was a special treat that everyone enjoyed.

Excellent property, very enjoyable stay.

8 adults in our group who all enjoyed staying at Hilltown. Very clean and tidy, spacious with large dinning space, nice sittingroom and very comfortable double/king sized beds. Ideal for families with children who can sleep in the room with 2 bunkbeds though that was a bit more challenging for our older group of adults getting up to the top bunks! Jennifer was very helpful on arrival and was nearby and contactable for any issues. We would all recommend Hilltown as a great base for exploring County Donegal and Donegal town has good eating and is not far away. Only thing to note for future visitors is that 3 of the bedrooms dont have curtains or blinds so any light sleepers may wish to bring sleeping masks, particularly in the height of summer. Thank you for the use of your lovely house.

One of the Best Experiences Ever

This was one of my family's favorite adventures that we've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Hilltown was an amazing house and an amazing property. Both the house and the surrounding area are absolutely beautiful. The house had everything that our family of five needed, and it would certainly accommodate at least two families. We hiked all over the property, drove (5 minutes) to the beach, visited the resident horses and sheep, and explored Donegal Town Centre which was 15 minutes away. We were able to drive 1.5 hours to Malin Head, 2 hours to Giant's Causeway / Bushmills, and 2 hours to Belfast. The owners and property managers (located nearby) were exceptionally helpful before and during our stay. I would highly recommend this house for a relaxing family adventure with plenty nearby for fun. We look forward to visiting again soon! Thank you for having us, we loved our time here.

Wonderful cozy spot for a Christmas Get away

We were delighted when we arrived and saw that they had put up a Christmas tree and lights. A great touch. We had a large group of 10 and it was terrific. A short drive from Donegal Town and many other places are easily accessible. The house having some basics when you arrive is excellent. The pantry has lots of spices and odds and ends so that you can easily make a meal. Most nights we cozied up in the living room and playing games altogether. Jennifer the caretaker was amazing and helped us being sure we had firewood and turf and knew how to work the oven. (Timer must be on…who knew?) Just an amazing experience for us all! Thank you!!

Delightful Days in Donegal

Our 2weeks in Ballintra were outstanding. The beauty of Donegal was stunning and the Hilltown setting was particularly impressive. Proximity to the beautiful strand at Murvagh Beach as well as the Ballintra Races were highlights of our stay. A working farm, with a well appointed and comfortable house had everything we wanted or needed to enjoy a relaxing and invigorating fortnight. The beautiful, often sunny, summer days faded into cool evenings when the turf burning in the fireplace took the edge off the chill. The owner of the property and the local caretakers were attentive and responsive throughout the booking process and during our entire stay, and provided a binder containing many suggestions for trips, shops, attractions and restaurants/pubs. The house was all we were looking for and hoping for, and more. We recommend this property so very highly. Thanks so much for allowing us the privilege of feeling at home in your ancestral residence.

Family Reunion/Trip

Myself, my husband and our four children (15,19,20,21)stayed here along with my sister, her husband and their two (19,21)children. We also had one niece (21)staying with us. Everyone had a fantastic time! We love the house and adore the setting. Jen, who minds the house, greeted us the first day and was excellent with communication throughout the whole trip. We enjoyed the cows and walking to Murvagh Beach. The sunsets were gorgeous there. The front patio area was a perfect spot for coffee every morning, and to gather at the end of the day and catch up on everyone’s day. There was plenty of space for everyone. You cannot walk to Donegal Town from the house, but I HIGHLY recommend Gallagher Cabs. The owner Michael and his wife Marie went above and beyond with transportation to and from town and also with an excursion. We stayed for two weeks, it was hard to leave Hilltown and I could not recommend it enough!

Better than all my already high expectations!

I found this property listed on VRBO several years ago, and wistfully planned and replanned how we might visit the Northwest of Ireland again and stay there. And this year, we made a 10 day stay happen! The house is wonderful..:comfortable, with plenty of space, nice kitchen, baths and beds. We had fantasy-like weather, so walks outside and coffee/wine on the patio were a huge bonus to our stay. Michael sent a lot of helpful material about the house and the area ahead of time. Once there, Jennifer and Geoffrey were terrific property managers who helped with recommendations and any quick questions. When you want to go to dinner and/or listen to music in town, a taxi service (we used Michael Gallagher who was superb) will ease any worries of a drive in the evening after a Guinness. It was an amazing stay due to such an amazing property and the good people who make you welcome. I’d go back in a heartbeat, even without the incredible patio weather! Thank you Michael, Jennifer and Geoffrey!

Loved the Hilltown

We all thoroughly our week at the Hilltown, even the two days we were forced to ‘stay in’ due to constant rain our seven grandchildren ages ranging from 2 to 13 had great fun playing in this very spacious house. (Only niggle there were little spiders making their webs in the corners which freaked out one of the girls)!! The Hilltown is an historic family home and I really enjoyed reading some of the history of the area. It is a lovely home to relax in and even though we’d rain most days we also got to see quite a bit of the surrounding area. Glenveigh National park is a must visit and also the beautiful local beach(Murvagh). We also took the kids for a day to Castletown Farm and activity park- this was a great hit with the kids. We had planned on a day trip to Bundoran but weather did not permit. Everything you need and more to self cater is provided for and all the instructions and info that was emailed before we arrived Ll was of great help. Many thanks for our great holiday in your historic family home, Michael, and we will hopefully return again.

We’ve been renting holiday homes in Ireland since 1996 and have been fortunate to choose good ones nearly every time. The Hilltown is our new favorite after a recent 10-night stay. Everything was exactly as advertised, the house is comfortable and spacious. We loved being in a family home rather than a generic rental; the photos, local artwork, and Irish books/resources made us feel like we’d been invited to a reunion. The 1970s farm ledger was a particularly fascinating glimpse into the property’s not-so-distant past.We are familiar with Co. Donegal from previous visits but were still able to find new places to explore such as the nearby cemetery with its many poignant markers. We visited several beaches and landmarks, and we learned the history of the area at the small but mighty County Donegal Museum in Letterkenny. We had great meals at many local spots but also enjoyed hearty home-cooked meals including a beef stew with 100% Irish ingredients including bay leaf from the garden! Both Michael (owner) and Jennifer (property manager) were quick to respond to inquiries and full of helpful information. More importantly, they were accommodating and compassionate when our plans changed twice due to an emergency back home. We can’t thank them enough for their kindness during an exceedingly difficult time.We would absolutely stay at The Hilltown again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat in beautiful Co. Donegal.
