OK for a Short Stay
Ocean Springs is a great place to visit, with a lot of options for dining and entertainment. Dian was a very gracious hostess and seemed eager to please. We asked to upgrade the cable TV (on our dime) and she took care of it the next day. She also responded quickly to a couple minor issues we had. The house is in a private location with a fenced in deck surrounded by trees. While private, the barking dogs in the neighborhood prevented any quiet times on the deck. They barked morning, noon and night. Of course this is not within Dian’s control, but it was bothersome. The house was fairly clean (floors, linens, counters) but there were cobwebs and dust bunnies on the higher parts of the walls. I stood on a chair with a broom and got some of it down. There was also a lot of dust under the bed and couches which we mopped. The house and furniture had a musty smell. Perhaps that is common in southern Mississippi. The appliances were fairly new and worked well with the exception of the washer that rocked and rolled during the spin cycles. The kitchen was well-stocked with dishes, glasses and cookware. The master bedroom bed was comfortable as were the pillows. The interior of the house is in good shape but the deck needs a lot of work. Dian mentioned she planned on having it repaired in the near future. The heat and air conditioning worked very well. We stayed 9 weeks in the Turtle House. We believe it is better suited for shorter stays.
Good location, nice property, needs some work
Overall the property was ok. Owner and property manager were very good. House and location are good, but inside needs some work. Location is at the end of a long private drive with the back (lots of windows) facing the woods (bayou / marsh?)...view was great, very nice, secluded feeling inside the house.
We saw the 1-star review the night before we left so did not know what to expect. I set expectations low because it is a pet friendly property.
Love the location, windows and light from the mid-century modern architecture and the deck and yard.
Inside needs a good cleaning ... cobwebs and thick dust coat the ceiling fans so did not run them...AC works well. Home (mainly bathrooms) smelled musty so we burned candles...also some mold in bathrooms but in the humid, deep South I know it's hard to manage. Chairs and couch had stains so we put sheets over them. Pillows could use changing.
Physically, there are a few levels (step-ups / step-down) which were difficult to navigate....step height and length was not consistent and made of different materials (tiles and wood). We had visitors ranging from 4 years to 70 years so was a bit of an issue ... not a deal breaker just interesting.
Enjoy your time in Ocean Springs.
Ummm when can we move in?? Haha
This house is truly a hidden gem!! Very private! Deck work is really cool. The huge windows were amazing! We only left for food. I had made all the plans, but once we saw how cool this house is, we decided to just enjoy it! The heater works well & we were kept very warm on a couple of cold nights! We also enjoyed the fire pit! The house also has a very good hot water system. You can enjoy a long bath in these big tubs! Overall my husband and I had a wonder 8 year wedding anniversary trip, and will definitely make a point to stay again!
Left after 1 day on 4 day rental- unhealthy conditions
We have used VBRO more than a dozen times, no problems but feel I need to warn others this rental has unhealthy & unsafe conditions, definitely not as described or expected. Nails sticking out moldings on floor could be stepped on, Sharp exposed tile edges on steps, not cared for, cobbled repair work and run down. There was mold in all windows-keys left outside front door - not in lock box and not code entry- I could go on for awhile! The entire rental smelled so strong pet urine took your breath away upon entry every time (we even tried putting rugs outside). All rugs were extremely soiled and there were more than noticeable stains on dining and bedroom chairs (Should be replaced or gotten rid off- I understand some renters don’t care for property like an owner but these were gross) The fact there were set mouse traps in the oven and cupboards Where you store food and cook, says a lot. After spending 12 hours there and having to deal with multiple 1-2” living roaches in kitchen, showering with them crawling out of drain at you, moving luggage to find them under my bag-I was out of there money paid didn’t matter! This is not healthy; mice and roaches carry disease pet urine that strong & saturated can make you physically ill not too mention eggs left by roaches can be brought home with you. It was a nightmare; we tried to message Owner with no reply Gave Her benefit of doubt that maybe property manager not doing job but upon calling and speaking to her it was clear she knew these things: tried saying they steamed floors and had exterminator there that day when we arrived day prior. if you have problems that bad you should not rent until taken care of. It was clear didn’t clean as owner stated as we went to store for cleaning supplies tried to wipe down tile and it was filthy, then she said no dogs had been there but guestbook last entry days before said in remarks how much pups loved the stay?? I don’t need anything fancy in a rental but do expect clean, healthy living conditions. This is not fit to rent out unless you like taking chances with your health! when I asked for 1/2 $ back she only wanted to give me night without fees, crazy to me how someone could think this rental is acceptable!
After 5 happy years with 3 poor reviews we could not make this woman happy. She is probably unhappy with the world. The house had been cleaned and the bug man had just sprayed the day before. She threaten with a bad review and did her best. I am sure we are not the first VRBO to receive such treatment. Please do not listen to such nonsense and come and enjoy the Turtle House.
A secluded hidden gem
As this was our first stay in a VRBO - we really didn't know what to expect. Dian (and property manager, Christina) were very patient and prompt in answering all of our "newbie" questions. Upon arrival to the Turtle House, we first noticed how secluded it is even though it is in a neighborhood. The deck was the first thing that caught our eye - it was amazing; this is where we spent the majority of the time. It almost had that "mountain feel" with all the trees around and the wildlife moving in the woods. The house was clean and perfectly suited our needs and had everything we needed for your stay. The bed in the master bedroom was comfortable with as many pillows and blankets you would need. Our friend slept on the couch which was also comfortable. I loved the ceiling fans in every room, it kept it nice and cool. Breakfast and coffee on the porch became our morning routine. We would absolutely stay here again!
The Turtle House on Gum Street è una proprietà unica progettata da Carroll B. Ishee.
