This was such a wonderful home for my family. Doune had everything we needed for day to day, and it wasn’t a far drive to anywhere else we wanted to go. The home was beautiful and full of family history. The grounds were so nice to walk in the evenings when we returned from sightseeing. We had everything we needed, and Vicki the host was very willing to help if we needed anything.

Fabulous stay for entire family. Once in a lifetime experience with 3 generations. Stayed for 10 days. So much to see and do w/in walking distance and nearby. Train from Dunblane made day trips to Edinburgh quick and easy. We learned to cook on the Aga for wonderful family breakfasts. Doune castle is a must as well as walking paths in Doune and along the river.

Magical! So many rooms, so little time! Our family of 2 seniors, 4 adults, and 5 teens/young adults had a wonderful time playing games, dining, exploring. After daytime outings to Loch Lomond, Oban, Sterling, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, we loved returning to our temporary “family home”. Even the host was magical: when we needed her, she appeared like magic! She always responded to our calls/texts immediately. The furnishings made us feel like we were royalty. The beds were comfy. Although there were several bathrooms, there are only 2 showers. But somehow we never seemed to mind. We loved nearby Doune castle for its authenticity. No furniture, but the audio guide makes it come alive. We took advantage of the bus service, taxis, and car hires to get around.

This property was outstanding! The history and uniqueness of the property cannot be overstated. The host was extremely helpful and the accommodations were clean and comfortable, the premises was a perfect setting! Our whole family loved staying here! The memories will stay with us forever!

Lovely, Unique Getaway

The property is lovely. The house is quirky, full of character, and no one wanted to leave! The gardens are beautiful, and relaxing, and all the kids (ages 3-9) loved the running space! Would recommend and would stay again!

Great spot for Scottish adventures

The castle was a great spot for our Scottish adventure. Plenty of room for the 11 of us and a great location in between Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Highlands. Kitchen was a great gathering place for the group.

Three generations summer holiday

Very enjoyable stay. House large enough for all the members of three different families to have their own space when needed. The chapel/dungeon was used occasionally as a refuge! Lovely child friendly grounds in which to play hide and seek and to admire the grape vine in the greenhouse. Brilliant views of Doune Castle from the house.

Fascinating location. We loved the history and uniqueness of the property. Lots of beds and bathrooms. Kitchen and scullery were really well stocked. The stairs were challenging for the littlest ones - I probably couldn’t recommend it for those with children under 5, although they loved the garden. Lots of running and playing. Overall it was a real adventure and we enjoyed it very much.

Best Time Ever!!!

Where to start. Amazing location, we had our own little castle for three nights. A huge family get together, all ages. So much to do and see. We will definitely be back. I honestly couldn’t recommend this place enough. Very well equipped, so much to explore inside and out.

Better than we could have imagined!

Vicki made the booking process easy and greeted us to give us a wonderful tour. The property was straight out of a storybook with museum quality furnishings and mysterious secrets to explore. The grounds were beautifully landscaped. The local town was warm, inviting, and accessible. Perfect place to have family gathering, not suitable for people that cannot climb stairs due to age of castle.

Family Connection

It has been a dream of mine to stay in Old Newton of Doune, since I found it was available as a rental, as my sisters and I are descendants of the Edmondstone family. It is an amazing home and Vicki and her husband were amazing hosts. The grounds were lovely, as well. Thank you for the amazing opportunity. (We came from Colorado, Nebraska, Hawaii & Wisconsin--5 descendants and two friends--we all loved our stay.)

Unique Property that Exceeded expectations

The house unfurls evermore new treasures as you proceed from the front door to the furthest reaches of the building. Exceedingly well equipped Kitchen and Dining Facilities. An intriguing, exciting, unique, house amidst an extensive garden. We ranged in age from 3 to 77 and all had a grand time.

Best 50th ever

What a wonderful place to spend 50th. Loved being able to cook on aga again and house was so well equipped. The dungeon added additional fun to this historic building. Vicki was so helpful recommending catering by Francesca who catered for 11 on the night. Visit to nearby distillery and red kites at Argaty both amazing. Thoroughly recommend this beautiful mini castle!

Fabulous venue

We were a group of friends +/- spouses singing in Dunblane Cathedral and used this as a base. It was a wonderful place to stay and accommodated 12 of us with ease. The house is very well-equipped and all the rooms were lovely. We even used the piano room for a rehearsal. It was great to be able to take a short walk to the castle and along the river and the grounds were great for the dogs. We could not have designed a better place for our needs. Old Newton is well-concealed but the Waitrose van found us easily - a perfect stay!

Outstanding experience - historic monument, exceptionally maintained and well located

Exceptional property that has preserved the heritage and history while offering everything needed to have a comfortable and memorable holiday. We were amazed at how well the property has been maintained and kept clean / equipped. 3 lounges to enjoy with fire places. Lovely kitchen and well stocked. Beautiful location and easily accessible to all directions of Scotland. Vicki was kind and responsive all thru. Amazing host. We were 3 families with kids and 6 adults. Each of us were delighted. Will love to return.

Awesome Experience

Cannot say enough good things about this property and its hostess. From the history of the house itself to the views and location with easy access to Doune, Dunblane and Stirling we were very impressed with the property. Our party of 12 stayed at Old Newton for a week. The house was big enough we had plenty of room to spread out. The views of Doune Castle, which was at most a ten minute walk, and the surrounding countryside were amazing. The garden was spacious and gave plenty of running room for the kids in our party. in addition we could not have asked for a better hostess. Vicki was amazing to work with! Would definitely stay at Old Newton again.

Fantastic Location for a very Special Birthday Weekend

We got together as a group of 10 great friends to celebrate my husbands 60th birthday and we had an incredible weekend. Old Newton of Doune is absolutely fascinating, and not only beautiful, quirky & historic, but very comfortable, homely & warm. The location is also brilliant - with Doune Castle & the village both a short stroll away. There seems to be a room to suit every occasion too in this extensive but cosy house. The main Kitchen was always the hub , however we really loved the music room & the long room for fun, and dining in the evening in the upstairs dining room was very grand. There are unique highlights to be found in every corner. Vicki is a great communicative host too. We loved our stay, it made a milestone birthday very memorable !

Family Scotland Trip

We loved Old Newton! Everything about the house was perfect for our family multi-generational group of 11. Our daughter and her family of 6 had three bedrooms and 2 baths in one part of the house and the other three couples had private bedrooms. The kitchen was fantastic and we made and ate fun meals there. The property was beautiful and with huge open spaces for play. We had everything we needed. Our evening walks around the castle and down to the river or to the park in Doune were memorable. We all loved coming back "home" after our adventurous day trips. Thank you Vicki! I will recommend Old Newton to everyone I know!

Wonderful Experience

6 adults & 2 children (3 generations) in our group. All of us found the estate fascinating. We could have spent our entire stay just touring the house and grounds, admiring the furniture, antiques, and substantial book collection...but there is so much to see in the area that returning to Old Newton each afternoon became a bonus for us. We read "Lady Of The Lake" aloud to the grandchildren in the parlour next to the room where Sir Walter Scott wrote it. That's a singular Scottish experience! Feature-wise: We made a couple of large family meals in the well-equipped kitchen. The beds were comfortable. The bathrooms charming. We listened to a concert by a Broadway leading lady (we brought our own) in the piano room, and watched "Monty Python and The Holy Grail" in the Long Room, a short walk from Doune Castle, where several key scenes were filmed. Vicki was a wonderful hostess, and we are looking forward to returning.

Friend trip

Had a great time at Old Newton of Doune. 9 women stayed for three nights. The home is cozy with lots of places to gather. We spent most of the time in the kitchen gathered around the long table. Had a chef come and prepare us dinner on the last night (very pretty dining room). The walls are thick so it’s actually quite quiet at night. Some of the rooms require you to go up a narrow spiral staircase. I just left the luggage on the first floor. Didn’t have the energy to drag it up to the top. Another thing is some of the beds are a little small for two people. Fine for couples. A little too cozy for friends. But there were a lot of single beds so it was fine for us. Make sure you get a tour and find all the rooms. We actually missed one of the en suite bedrooms the first day. The town is small but charming. Easy to walk to. Market. Cafe. A few boutiques. And Doune castle is right there - a very pretty walk. You can see it all in one day so plan for some excursions.

Unbelievable Old Newton

During our stay at Old Newton we were joined by family and friends and on numerous occasions someone was always saying how "unbelievable" an experience it was. The house is historic and huge - we only used 3 of the 6 bedrooms (the ones closest to bathrooms - not all had showers) and there were so many shared spaces that you could literally get lost in. We didn't use the formal dining room at all as the eat in kitchen became the focal point of the house. The kitchens (2) are very well equipped with plenty of plates, cups, glasses, etc. We did evening drinks in either the music room, dungeon or outdoor patio (when the weather cooperated). The gardens were lovely and the views of Doune Castle were awe inspiring and just a short walk away (audio tour of Castle and connection to the Outlander and Monty Python is fun). Also close was the local co-op which was handy for picking up morning breakfast rolls and afternoon beer/wine. Be aware there are not many food options in Doune (the local pub and Italian restaurant are permanently closed) but a new restaurant (Waterside is due to open in September - run by the same group that does Riverside in Dunblane which we highly recommend), Vicki, our host was great - met us when we arrived and oriented us to the property (including the Aga stove - cooking on it was another "once in a lifetime" experience). Doune is a great base for exploring Stirling, Callander and Trossachs National Park and this property will not disappoint.
