My first advice would be read about Eleuthera and decide if this is the kind of place you like to go for vacation. Think of spending a week at summer camp: Not exactly roughing it, but it's also not anything like visiting Nassau or Orlando. If you're down with what Eleuthera has to offer, read on.
The Hummingbird is really lovely and well kept. The description and pics are accurate. The property is like a tropical garden and is quiet and fairly isolated. The house would be what I'd call "cozy" for four, but it would be totally ideal for a couple and two small kids. It pretty much has all the stuff you'd expect in a vacation cottage or cabin. The two sleeping areas are at opposite ends for decent privacy, everything works, kitchens and bathrooms well furnished. The master bedroom: you will almost certainly need to run the A/C to help cool it down for baths and bedtime. The rest of the house felt cool enough with just the cross-breeze.
The beach: People have different mental pictures when you say the word "beach" and so I will describe this one as "where the ocean meets the land." It changes a lot, with time and tides and storms, but at the present time (and I'll guess most of the time) it's fairly rocky along the water. There were lots and lots of shells if you're into that. There are a couple of spots where it's relatively easy to get in and out. Once in the water and beyond the first 10 yards of shoreline it was all pure white coral sand with very little in the way of any kind of debris. It was fairly shallow (thigh to waist deep) for many yards out. The surf was very mild, maybe 1 foot at most, and a lot of the time it was more like a swimming pool.
If you're not the kind who likes to be IN the water, or if your desire is for body surfing, etc. Eleuthera has you covered, in spades. There are plenty of beaches within 10 or 20 minutes drive that have long, wide expanses of clean, pink sand for walking or sunbathing, relatively few to no people, and good vigorous Atlantic surf.
Governor's Harbor is minutes away and more or less has everything you might need in the way of basic supplies/groceries, party stores and also a good selection of places to eat or get carryout. I found the people are very friendly if you will take time to engage with them.
The VRBO host (Marion Macy) was wonderful to work with. I know for sure I'll be coming back again.
