Region: The ultimate in “year-round” appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.
Town: The picturesque gritstone village of Birchover is believed to once have been used by Druids as a ceremonial worship site. There’s a rock formation called Rowtor Rocks, with caves and carvings, prehistoric monuments and stone circles, including The Nine Ladies overlooking the village on Stanton Moor (where you can also find the Cork Stone). At Robin Hood's Stride and Cratcliffe Tor, a medieval hermit's cave can also be explored. Just five miles away, the popular town of Matlock, together with its neighbour, Matlock Bath, has been attracting visitors to the area since the spa was developed in the late 17th century. Set in the beautiful wooded gorge of the River Derwent, the Matlocks offer a range of shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as a host of attractions including Gulliver’s Kingdom and the Peak District Mining Museum. Magnificent views down the gorge can be enjoyed from the cable car which takes visitors up to the Heights of Abraham. In the opposite direction is the market town of Bakewell, and a little further beyond lies Chatsworth House and Park. With walking and cycling to suit all abilities, thriving villages and some wonderful scenery to enjoy, this part of the Peaks is sure to tempt you back time and time again.
