First, I should mention that a major consideration for us in selecting a mountain getaway rental is that it must be pet-friendly ... and October Hill is. Big plus.
Perched right above the thirteenth fairway on Mt. Mitchell Golf Course (if you're a golfer, you can't pass up this spectacular course), and within audible distance of the splendid South Toe River. Surrounded by trees, October Hill is quiet and peaceful - just perfect for a mountain getaway during a busy, humid summer. Because the property is high up - near the highest point on the Eastern Continental Divide - the temperatures are 10-15 degrees lower than down in the flats.
The chalet is well-appointed, comfortably furnished and can accommodate up to 7-8 people by our count, with three bedrooms, one on each level. A good sized deck allows for lounging and listening to the relaxing sounds of the river ... and the occasional golf cart passing by.
The bedrooms are good sized, plenty of closet space, ceiling fans and screens on the windows if fresh air is your preference, but the chalet is air conditioned as well. Towels and linens are provided and the beds are very comfortable.
A full kitchen with microwave, toaster, dishwasher, oven and cooktop, and coffee maker and full size refrigerator makes the place a home-away-from home. All utensils and cookware are included.
Full array of programming for the several flat screen TVs provided by Dish Network, and wi-fi throughout the house.
Outside, there is a charcoal grille and a kid's play set, too.
Note: at the end of your stay, you need to take your bagged garbage to a nearby collection area, as there is no trash pickup.
Also, the town of Burnsville is about 16 miles away, and it is a great place for shopping and dining. We discovered the Garden Deli there, and had a wonderful dining experience.
