Sicignano degli Alburni, a strategic outpost of the Cilento National Park, is a charming town of Roman origin founded around 450 B.C. It is nestled among chestnut groves at the foot of the Alburni Mountains and features an urban layout rich with paths that intertwine and wind through cobblestone alleys adorned with arches and covered passageways. Within the historic center, be sure to visit the Church of St. Margaret with its Baroque bell tower, which houses 17th-century sculptures with Renaissance doorjambs. Located further down the valley from the town is the Capuchin friary, built around 1580. With a quadrangular floor plan, it has three levels featuring cross vaults. It is currently in a state of neglect and is the focus of a social restoration project (involving international civil service volunteer camps). The castle, which appears to have been built by the Normans around 1250, retains all its main features intact, such as battlements, arrowslits, and stone portals. The hospitality offered by the “Sentiero del Riccio” finds its natural expression in small, renovated apartments situated high above the valley and blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
