Granted a Market Charter in 1252 by King Henry III, the town's markets thrive nearly 800 years later. The delightful cobbled market square hosts two market days—a weekly Wednesday event and a farmers' market on the last Saturday of each month. A short 7-mile drive brings you to the city of Carlisle, while the famous Scottish wedding destination of Gretna Green beckons just 14 miles away. For a day of exploration, consider venturing 30 miles to the Lake District National Park, where a variety of options await, from a leisurely trip on a steamer across Ullswater to adventurous hikes up the Wainwrights or engaging in invigorating water sports. There is also plenty to do close by for all ages from The Solway Aviation Museum also at five-minute car drive or for those people wanting a nice walk just a forty-minute walk away!
