The neighbourhood
A few minutes walk from the house, the sandy beach, backed by dunes, stretches as far as you can see, between the cliffs of Les Deux Caps. A top kite-surf destination, it’s overseen by lifeguards in high season and offers a seascape of unspoilt beauty. There’s also a recently re-designed promenade which makes for a very pleasant walk with wonderful views.
This year-round resort has a full programme of public events - music, fairs, fireworks, brocantes, and the Fête des Flobarts in August celebrating Wissant’s fishing heritage. Local crafts, beers and foods feature in the large market every Wednesday of the year and from April to September there’s a Friday night market as well. We suggest a visit to the Tourist Office in the village to make the most of what’s on.
The area is celebrated for its rich history, protected nature areas, and the special light appreciated by painters that gives its name to the Opal coast. The Wissant School painters' walk lets you discover the history of these artists who came from 1880. They were seduced by the exceptional beauty of the landscapes and the light of Wissant, its bay and the Deux-Caps site.
A picturesque, vibrant and welcoming village, Wissant has received visitors from Lille, Belgium and the UK for many years. It has different charms during every season, from the friteries and ice-creams enjoyed in the summer to the coffee or mulled wine in a traditional bar after a winter market morning. In the village square, is the magnificent 15th century church of St. Nicholas, with working bells.
We hope once you have visited, you will want to return to this special place.
