While in Dorchester, explore the National Trust’s Hardy’s House, Max Gate, which the English novelist designed himself. Also venture 5.5 miles from your base to see the charming Hardy’s Cottage, where he was born. Plan group excursions down to the picturesque Isle of Purbeck and Jurassic Coast. Take walks out along the dramatic South West Coast Path here. See the limestone arch of Durdle Door, 16.5 miles away, or swim or snorkel in the turquoise waters of Lulworth Cove, 17.5 miles away.

Make your way inside to spread out and enjoy the extensive accommodation. From the main entrance, wander through to the lounge to light the open fire, pour a drink from the cabinet and set up the games table. Stoke up the second open fire in the family room instead, then find a film on the Smart TV. The kitchen/lounge/diner is another perfect place for gathering to rest, recuperate and catch up on each other’s news. With an opulent, high-specification finish, this gorgeous room has every appliance you could require for catering for your party. Pull a bottle of wine from the fridge in the butler’s pantry, pour yourself a glass, then relax at the breakfast bar or table with a magazine as dinner roasts in the oven. Alternatively, head down to the comfortable seating and bask beside the wood burner. Also downstairs are a WC, large laundry room and excellent gym, which comes with cushioned flooring and equipment, including an elliptical runner, exercise bike, Pilates reformer and a full set of weights. After a full workout, pamper yourself in the sauna for a spell. Stairs from beside the kitchen lead down to the lower ground floor, where there is a utility room, WC and access to the courtyard and garden. Your beautiful bedrooms, with views out over the verdant grounds and countryside, are all situated on the first floor. These include three super-king-size bedrooms, one with a dressing room and en-suite bathroom with a freestanding bath. The other two, one of which has an en-suite shower room, feature zip-and-link beds that can be made into a twin on request. There are two double bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room, plus a king-size bedroom, with an en-suite shower room. The family bathroom, which has a bath and a shower, is also here. To ensure you have the option of complete rest during your stay, a full breakfast hamper will be prepared for each day and a daily housekeeping service can be provided by arrangement. Private catering is also offered upon request and for an additional cost.

The beautiful, well-maintained gardens here are also perfect for your group holiday. Spill out onto the patio, benches and various seating areas to relax together in the sunshine. The dining space, which has a BBQ, provides seating for up to 16 people. Stroll across the lawn, which opens out into the splendid estate parkland and surrounding countryside. Supervise children and pets as the garden is not enclosed. There is private, off-road parking here for eight cars.
