I have stayed at this house twice and I can’t wait to go back. The first time, there were three couples and the second time we had two. There’s plenty of room for six (and none of the bedrooms share walls), but four is better for a quieter, more relaxing getaway.
The house has a big, open living room with lots of natural light where everyone can gather to talk or play games (of which there are plenty), but there are also many places where you can go off and be alone. At one point we went and sat under the covered porch with the outdoor blankets (and with the heat on!), had a glass of wine, and watched the rain. It was so relaxing…I was worried that the rain in the forecast would ruin our getaway, but it turned out to be wonderful.
I’ve stayed in two of the rooms and they’re both roomy and nicely done, with comfort and relaxation in mind. One room has a reading area, which I loved. Each room has fantastic robes, yoga mats, a selection of interesting books, a music player, and of course a super comfortable bed with nice linens. And while I loved the rooms, I would go back just for the bathroom (I’m not joking!), which is has a heated tile floor and a shower that is incredible.
The house is close to a lot of great wineries and restaurants and they’re all listed in the house book. We especially loved Salt & Stone and Glen Ellen Star. We didn’t make the trek to Napa, as there’s plenty to do nearby. We stopped at the Village Market in Glen Ellen (great wine selection!) and bought a bunch of groceries so we could cook together. The kitchen is well equipped.
I love Sonoma and I know I’ll go back to this house, because it’s the perfect place to unwind. You feel it the minute you walk in. Everything you could possibly need has been taken care of. It’s tastefully decorated and arranged, but it doesn’t feel like you’re staying at your fussy aunt’s house. It’s very nice, very comfortable.
It’s also very quiet and private. There are neighbors around, but you don’t really see them (though you can occasionally hear them). You can definitely hear sounds of nature…listen for the owls in the evening.
Like I said, I can’t wait to go back. I’m hoping for good weather next time, but to be honest, it doesn’t really matter. As much as I love to go exploring, Himmel is a pretty nice place to be “stuck” inside.
