We received sand flea bites the minute we got out of the boat. A small short haired dog ran out of our room when the door was first opened. Door hinge bottom pin was missing so it sort of didn't open well, no lock on the door. No electricity, no running water. Room had two beds with soiled linens (the dog had been on one of them, evidenced by the sand on the sheet. The room was dirty, at best! If there was no water (and no HOT water), how sanitary could the food prep be? We contacted VRBO via text and they moved us to another Island. But, not before my wife received approximately 100+ bites on her body, me, not so many but I have hair on my legs and chest which protected me. The new Island lodging was better, but because the room was open to the outside (no air-conditioning) there were lizards in the room. My wife and I saw them crawling on our luggage, water bottles and exposed clothing. She freaked out and had trouble sleeping as she saw two on the bed as well. This isn't rustic, this is substandard accommodations. What that tells me is the locals here are living in the same squalor, as they accept this standard for well paying guests? Not even to mention food handling. Scary!
