Set in the small NSW town of Gunning, Barbour House was built in 1929, originally the residence and surgery of Dr William Barbour.
The space
Barbour House is in beautiful historic Gunning and boasts peace and tranquility for all who venture here. The slower pace of life is easy, relaxing and friendly.
THE SPACE
The rooms are private, self-contained and your choice of one or two bedrooms with private bathroom. These rooms are separated from the main house by a locked door ensuring privacy for our guests.
There are two queen sized beds both with electric blankets for those cold winter nights. Heating is via ducted heating vents or a wood fireplace. For those hot summer days there is air conditioning and a lovely shady verandah.
There is a smart TV, Wi-Fi, and kitchenette. There is a coffee machine and tea making facilities assist you to get your caffeine hit in the mornings and during the summer there is an outside BBQ and outdoor seating looking out across the Gunning Valley. There is a laundry (please see hosts) with a washing machine and dryer if you need to use them.
We provide all linen, towels, pillows and quilts along with a basic pantry. There is also a selection of books and board games.
We love the space we have created for our guests, and we ask that you leave our space as you found it, clean and tidy. Our house and its surrounds are a smoke free zone.
BREAKFAST OPTIONS
From Thursday to Saturday nights, we provide a full breakfast (fresh eggs, local bacon and fritters).
From Sunday through to Wednesday night, we provide continental breakfast (bread, cereals and condiments).
LUNCH & DINNER OPTIONS:
There are two cafés in Gunning and usually operate between 7.00am to 3.00pm seven days a week.
The Old Hume Cafe is located on the main street and serves old fashioned cafe style food and is available for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.
The Merino Cafe located on the northern end of the main street is open from 7am every day, excluding some public holidays serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, homemade cakes, slices, tea and coffee.
The Telegraph Hotel is Gunning's local pub with old fashioned prices. The bistro serves a good pub meal until 8.00pm.
Our local petrol station acts as a corner store with basic food supplies and a plan to expand into a larger store.
THE AREA
One of Australia’s most significant colonial explorations began in Gunning in 1824. Explorers Hume and Hovell led a groundbreaking expedition from Gunning to Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne in search of new grazing land.
Gunning is extremely central. We are located 45 minutes north of Canberra, 25 minutes south of Goulburn, 20 minutes north of Yass and 20 minutes from Murrumbateman so you are more than welcome to use it as a base to explore the Southern Tablelands.
Gunning has a lovely array of quaint shops from the gorgeous Will & Russ with lovely and interesting products through to a first-class butcher as well as the Picture House Gallery and Bookshop, a treasure trove of second books and movie memorabilia, housed inside the historic Coronation Theatre.
Guest access
Our guests have access to their own driveway and if required a space for a caravan/trailer.
There are no keys involved and access is through a coded security door which is private and separate to the rest of the house.
Other things to note
We do have our own free-range chickens which produce the delicious fresh eggs provided in your breakfast pack.
If you wish to have breakfast with our fabulous hens, we can arrange an alfresco dining experience, our hens love to meet and greet you.
