Private Stay — Modernized Traditional Townhouse in the Heart of the City with
Hidden in the heart of Kyoto, Guesthouse Shiori is a private, one-house stay in a carefully preserved 100-year-old machiya townhouse-a rare chance to experience Kyoto not as a visitor, but as a resident.
Passing through the traditional lattice door, the city’s bustle gently fades away. Inside, you are welcomed by a sense of calm shaped by time: original wooden beams that have supported this home for a century, sliding doors softened by countless seasons, and the quiet presence of craftsmanship that speaks without words. Every element tells a story-one of daily life, patience, and care passed down through generations.
At the center of the house lies a private tsuboniwa courtyard, reserved exclusively for our guests. Here, light and shadow shift throughout the day, leaves move with the wind, and rain becomes a gentle sound rather than an inconvenience. It is a space to pause, to breathe, and to feel Kyoto’s subtle beauty--whether with morning coffee, an evening drink, or simply a moment of stillness.
While the soul of the house remains traditional, comfort has been thoughtfully updated for modern living. The kitchen and bathroom are designed with clean, functional lines, blending seamlessly into the historic structure. You will find high-quality Japanese-made appliances and amenities, chosen for reliability, ease of use, and quiet performance--details meant to support your stay without drawing attention away from the experience itself.
The living spaces are intentionally uncluttered, allowing the textures of wood, light, and space to speak for themselves. This is not a place of excess, but of balance--where old and new coexist naturally. Whether you are reading, cooking, sharing conversation, or simply resting, the house invites you to slow down and settle into a more mindful rhythm.
Located in central Kyoto, Guesthouse Shiori offers exceptional convenience without sacrificing tranquility. Major sightseeing areas, historic temples, local markets, and renowned dining spots are all easily accessible. Step outside and explore Kyoto’s culture, cuisine, and daily life-then return to a home that feels quietly removed from the crowds.
This machiya is ideal for travelers who value authenticity, design, and atmosphere. It is especially well suited for couples, friends, or thoughtful travelers seeking a deeper connection with Kyoto beyond standard accommodations.
At Guesthouse Shiori, we hope you don’t simply stay the night--but create memories that linger, like a bookmark placed gently within your journey through Kyoto.
