Activities:
The proximity to Basel, Switzerland, and Weil am Rhein, Germany—just a 5-minute drive away—will add a whole new dimension to your outings. Enjoy all the possibilities offered by the Three Countries and experience this distinctly international atmosphere.
The Three Countries Footbridge, designed in steel by the Franco-Austrian architect Dietmar Feichtinger, is a bridge spanning the Rhine between the towns of Huningue (France) and Weil am Rhein (Germany). Opened in 2007 and boasting the world’s longest span at 238 meters, this footbridge is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. Its name comes from its location between France, Germany, and Switzerland, which is about 100 meters away.
The town of Weil am Rhein (Germany), just a 10-minute drive away, is twinned with Huningue, its French neighbor on the opposite bank, and boasts a rich historical heritage. It is situated on the banks of the Rhine, at the junction of the Swiss and French borders, nestled in a small green enclave. Art and design come together in the town of Weil am Rhein: the internationally renowned Vitra Design Museum attracts architecture enthusiasts, while the Vitra Haus, a building dedicated to living spaces, captivates visitors of all ages.
The Vitra company designs and manufactures chairs, and giant versions of these models can be spotted here and there as you stroll through the city’s streets. The Museum of Rural Life, the Textile Museum, the Carnival, the Christmas Market, Wine Day, the Street Festival, and the city’s cultural program make it an attractive destination year-round.
The city of Basel is considered the cultural capital of Switzerland. The city is renowned for its many museums, including the Kunstmuseum—Switzerland’s largest art museum and, historically, the world’s first art collection open to the public (1661)—the Beyeler Foundation, the Tinguely Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. It is also known for Art Basel, one of the world’s most important annual contemporary art events, held around mid-June. With forty museums spread throughout the canton, the city is one of Europe’s major cultural centers.
The Parc des Eaux Vives: Kayaking, canoeing, rafting, hydrospeed, or whitewater swimming. This canal between Huningue and Niffer connects the Grand Canal d’Alsace and the Rhône-Rhine Canal. Crossed by EuroVelo 15, its banks are popular with cycling tourists. In terms of scenery, the route has the advantage of passing through the lovely Petite Camargue Alsacienne. http://www.ville-huningue.fr/
La Petite Camargue Alsacienne: Reconnect with nature by exploring the Nature Reserve, a protected area of national and international importance that exemplifies the richness of the Rhine plain. https://www.petitecamarguealsacienne.com/
Zoological and Botanical Park: Located just a few minutes from downtown Mulhouse, the Zoological and Botanical Park covers 25 hectares and, set in an exceptional natural setting, is home to more than 1,200 animals representing 170 different species, as well as 3,500 species and varieties of plants. It is a wonderful place for strolling and observing the local flora and fauna. The park has been awarded the national “Remarkable Garden” designation thanks to the richness of its botanical collections. Colors and scents fill these gardens, changing with the seasons. https://www.zoo-mulhouse.com/
Travel back in time at Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle: Beautifully restored, Haut-Koenigsbourg invites you to experience life in a castle! Perched on a rocky outcrop, its imposing silhouette dominates the landscape and offers an unparalleled panorama. https://www.haut-koenigsbourg.fr/fr/
Raise a glass before the gates of Kaysersberg Castle: A festive spirit fills the air on this stroll toward Kaysersberg Castle—upon arrival, a tasting of a grand cru wine awaits. The walk begins in the village and gently climbs the hundred or so steps leading to the castle. As you gain altitude, the scenery becomes more lush, and a sense of wonder gradually takes hold. Once you reach the foot of the medieval castle, it’s time to savor this exquisite wine. https://www.kaysersberg.com/
