I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. There is as much of a social life in the Lower Puna area as any big city!
I fell in love with this property in ’05 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my arrival, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In the 1990 lava flow, the property was preserved as the lava swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming new ones. This newly created land now belongs to the state. There is approximately 300’ of lava between Bali Temple and the Pacific Ocean!
I saw myself living at this property forever, so I renovated it for 2 years in the style I wished to live!
Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is a magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.
