It is part of a chain of lagoons within the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. Here, thousands of cranes rest in autumn, creating a spectacular natural phenomenon. The lagoon is an ideal area for all kinds of water sports and is also highly valued by anglers. Just a few kilometers from Vieregge is the Schaabe, a 12-kilometer-long spit of land, whose fine sand makes it one of Rügen's most beautiful beaches. Opposite Vieregge lies the island of Hiddensee, which can be reached by ferry from Schaprode. The island's famous sights, such as the chalk cliffs, Granitz Hunting Lodge, and the white town of Putbus, can be reached by car in less than 45 minutes.
