Spectacular OnTheBeach 5 bedrooms and 2 extra bedrooms separate Cottage
Located on the rocky shoreline that provides easy access to Cape Town’s most scenic beach walk, with nothing between you and the rolling breakers, and sea and mountain views from every angle, this is one of the best located beach houses in a beautiful part of the south peninsula.
Aside from mesmerising views, Taonga offers easy laid-back living. Warmed by wood, with a kitchen designed for communal cooking, plenty of nooks and seamless flow to the outdoors, it’s spacious enough for 12 yet cosy for 4.
QUICK FACTS
Main House (max. capacity 8): 4 X Bedrooms + 4 X Private Bathrooms. Separate Cottage max. capacity 4 includes 2 X bedrooms + 2 X Private Bathrooms. The nightly rate is adjusted upwards for groups larger than 8 persons. Regrettably the cottage cannot be rented separately.
Backup power system: Lights, Internet, Fridge & Freezer, and Security systems (see detail below). The property is cared for by a full-time housekeeper, who lives on the property in a detached residence. Cleaning, laundry are provided free of charge, and discussed before arrival.
THE VIEWS
An absolutely prime location on the ocean at the southern tip of the Noordhoek valley, Taonga offers a front row seat to view rolling breakers silvered by the sun.
North, across the bay, the undulating mountainous spine that curves its way down the length of the Cape Peninsula creates a marvellous backdrop beyond the sea, with peaks etched against a deep blue sky that turns every shade of pink in the setting sun.
As the evening stars flicker up, the pulsing light of Slangkop lighthouse to the south guides the ships rounding the southwestern tip of Africa, and Hout Bay is visible as a twinkling diamond necklace strung from the base of Chapmans Peak to the Sentinel.
LIVING IS EASY
Taonga means “treasure” in Maori, and that is exactly what this beach house is.
Step through fortress-like Rajasthani gates that provide an impenetrable façade and privacy from the tiny cul de sac, and into a magical garden to reach Taonga’s front door.
In the open-plan living space, with glass to the west framing dramatic ocean vista of blue, the dining table takes centre stage. The open-plan kitchen - furnished with everything you need to cook up a storm - has generous counters and seating that invites convivial evenings. A large scullery adjacent with dishwasher, washing machine, ice-making machine.
Several choices when it comes to where you’ll while away the day – the breakfast bar in the northern corner, the long outdoor dining table on the deck, the table next to the pool, gazing into the wood-burning fireplace, or in the sun-splashed north-west corner.
OUTDOOR AT PLAY
The large ocean-facing deck is furnished for all season living, with a dining table under shade and a choice of comfortable chairs to soak up the sun, plus a jacuzzi to toast the rising moon.
To the north, a sheltered corner offers a private pool lushly fringed by indigenous plants, and shaded table next to the large buolt in braai / BBQ.
A flight of stairs from the deck provides easy access to the public pathway that links De Kom with Long Beach.
SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS (8 to 12)
Up a flight of stairs, tucked into the eaves, the main bedroom is a timber cocoon, with picture-perfect ocean views from reading chairs, king-size bed, desk, balcony, bath, shower and toilet.
A comfortable lounge arrangement under a statement pendant light faces a large screen TV. Open shelving and railings create a walk in cupboard. A gorgeous shower and a claw-foot bath tub. Doors open onto a small balcony with two chairs – yet another great sundowner spot.
Downstairs are three en-suite bedrooms; the largest is furnished with king-size bed with sliding doors offer direct access to the seaview deck. The two smaller (one twin, one double) are located opposite each other; both have shower bathrooms and sash windows framing green garden views.
A separate garden cottage can be hired (additional cost; not available on its own) with two en-suite bedrooms (one double, one twin, both with own showers) sharing their own more
compact open-plan lounge-dining area and kitchen.
SECURITY
Secure parking for up to three cars behind remote controlled garage doors. The house is secured at night by an easy to use alarm and a security company is on call 24/7 in the unlikely event you require them. The periphery is monitored by an external network of security cameras. There are no internal cameras and the external network is monitored by an off site security company during night hours only. The Hosts have gone to great lengths to provide guests with both privacy and security.
THE AREA
A few minutes on foot and you’re on Long Beach, the broad stretch of white sand that links the surf breaks of this charming seaside village all the way to the base of Chapmans Peak, or a short stroll from its tiny retail heart, stopping for coffee en route to the village delis, waving at the locals in the surf shop … living in laid-back Kommetjie feels like stepping into an earlier time, a simpler world.
Home to surfers, artists, digital nomads and Capetonians keen to escape the city, Kommetjie is a coastal village with a friendly laid back atmosphere that feels like a million miles away from Cape Town’s city centre, yet it is only an hour away.
Noordhoek Farm Village – a charming retail centre with some great restaurant options – is just under 20 minutes away. For a big shopping expedition, Sun Valley Mall is under 15 minutes. Major tourist sites such as Cape Point and Simonstown and its penguins are no more than 30 minutes away, as is the Constantia winelands, with its stellar top-tier dining options.
It’s a holiday home that is all about slow living – passing tousle-haired kids with surfboards or barefoot on skateboards; delis that caters for vegans as well as wine lovers; coffee shops with water bowls for the punters who wouldn’t go anywhere without their dogs.
